ŠKODA AUTO has replaced its classic equipment lines with Design Selections for the interior of the all-electric ŠKODA ENYAQ iV. The Czech car manufacturer combines wool with recycled polyester from disposable PET-bottles for the seat covers of the Design Selection LODGE.

In collaboration with suppliers and the scientific community, the company is working on sustainably produced, recyclable and durable materials for use in series production. In the future, ŠKODA AUTO’s procurement processes will place even more emphasis on sustainability and the circular economy along the entire value chain.

Markéta Truhelková, Coordinator of Purchasing – Interior at ŠKODA AUTO, emphasises, “The consistent use of sustainably produced materials in our current vehicles is changing the requirements in the Purchasing division and therefore also the demands on our suppliers.

That’s why – true to our Simply Clever ethos – we are working together to develop innovative sustainable materials that stand up to everyday use, are easy to work with and create attractive design accents.” Recycled-PET-bottles – Energy – Bioplastics

-Germany Cries Foul Over Nuclear Energy in EU’s Green Investment Rule Book

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party coalition government has voiced its objections to a European Union draft plan to label nuclear power plants as a sustainable energy source in a formal letter to Brussels, ministers said on Saturday.

The EU taxonomy aims to set a gold standard for green investments, helping climate-friendly projects to pull in private capital and stamping out “greenwashing”, where investors and companies overstate their eco-credentials.

“As the federal government, we have once again clearly expressed our rejection of the inclusion of nuclear energy. Recycled-PET-bottles – Energy – Bioplastics

It is risky and expensive,” Vice Chancellor and Economy Minister Robert Habeck said in a joint statement with Environment Minister Steffi Lemke, both senior members of the Greens party.

In its letter to Brussels, published by the Economy Ministry on its web page, the German government also pointed to the lack of any safety requirements regarding nuclear power plants.

“Serious accidents with large, cross-border and long-term hazards to humans and the environment cannot be excluded,” Berlin said in its letter, adding that the question of where to store radioactive waste in the long term was still unanswered.

Habeck and Lemke said that, if the European Commission disregarded Germany’s objections and left the draft plan unchanged, Berlin should reject the plan in their opinion. Recycled-PET-bottles – Energy – Bioplastics

However, German government sources told Reuters earlier this month that coalition parties wanted to avoid an escalation in the EU dispute and agreed in coalition talks behind closed doors to abstain in any upcoming vote.

-Hyundai Oilbank works with U.S. biopolymer producer Danimerc to produce bioplastics

Hyundai Oilbank, a refining unit of South Korea’s Hyundai shipbuilding group, tied up with Danimer Scientific, a biopolymer manufacturer in the United States, to develop degradable plastic products using polyhydroxyalkanoates.

They would cooperate in research, marketing, and manufacturing as well as joint investments. Recycled-PET-bottles – Energy – Bioplastics

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are produced by bacteria during the fermentation process of sugar or lipids including fats, oils and waxes to store carbon and energy, and can be used with other monomers to create different types of bioplastics that break down over time. PHAs are 100 percent biodegradable even in seawater.

Danimer Scientific uses PHA and other biopolymers to create a range of applications. The company’s Nodax PHA is a class of bioplastics produced from bacterial microorganisms that store PHA polyesters for energy in their cell walls.

Hyundai Oilbank and Danimer Scientific would cooperate in PHA research, marketing, and manufacturing while developing new high value-added applications with PHA and considering joint investment in production facilities in response to Asian demand.

“Plastic use continues to increase despite the serious destruction of an ecosystem caused by the incineration and reclamation of waste plastics that are difficult to recycle. Recycled-PET-bottles – Energy – Bioplastics

We can reduce environmental pollution by replacing existing plastics with bioplastics,” Choi Jin-woo, a Hyundai Oilbank official in charge of new businesses, said in a statement on January 26.

-Stretch-Blow 1000-Liter IBCs from PET

Cypet introduces a one-stage ISBM system to provide a clear alternative to HDPE bulk containers. Recycled-PET-bottles – Energy – Bioplastics

Cypet Technologies, a Cyprus-based producer of PET injection stretch-blow molding (ISBM) machines, has come out with its largest model yet, capable of making 1000-liter (264-gal) intermediate bulk containers (IBCs). Cypet is looking for a strategic partner to cooperate in commercializing PET IBCs globally.

Up to now, the largest of Cypet’s single-stage ISBM machines could make up to 120 L PET containers with up to 400-mm necks. These machines are based on a horizontal injection molding machine platform with special tooling and automation. Servohydralic and all-electric models are available. Preform injection and stretch-blowing are accomplished in the same clamp with a special tooling package, in which the preform cavities are located below the blowing cavities. Preforms are molded in a horizontal orientation, while containers are blown in a vertical position. In a typical cycle, when the clamp opens, the preform cavities rotate from horizontal to vertical position, allowing an integrated top-entry linear robot to extract the preforms and transfer them to the blow molds while retaining their vertical orientation. The robot arm also extracts finished containers in the same operation. The clamp closes, and the containers are stretch-blown in the upper molds, while a new set of preforms are injection molded in the lower tooling. See a video of a Cypet machine in action at short.ptonline.com/cypet.

Cypet currently has two of its machines installed in the U.S., and two more are coming to plants in the U.S. and Mexico this year.

-New Plasticizer Combines Low-Temperature Flexibility and UV Resistance

Evonik’s new material is suited for demanding exterior and interior applications.

A new plasticizer developed by Evonik is characterized by low-temperature flexibility and UV resistance, imparting weather resistance and durability to end-use products. ELATUR DINCD is easy to process because of its low viscosity and is suited for demanding exterior and interior applications, such as textile fabrics, roofing membranes, floor coverings, adhesives and sealants, as well as paints and coatings.

“In developing the new isononanol-based plasticizer, we were able to draw on many years of experience in research, production, and marketing,” said Dr. Michael Graß, Head of Application Technology for plasticizers. Recycled-PET-bottles – Energy – Bioplastics

“This has enabled us to develop a product based on our technologies that offers customers new opportunities in product optimization through a combination of good processability and high durability.”

Evonik has offered ELATUR CH, another new-generation plasticizer, in addition to VESTINOL 9 since 2013. As a fast fuser for special PVC applications, ELATUR DPT completes the portfolio and is particularly effective in combination with ELATUR CH, said Evonik. Recycled-PET-bottles – Energy – Bioplastics
