Carbeau Raises €35.2M as Avantium Spins Out CO2 Conversion Platform

Avantium has spun out its electrochemical CO₂ conversion platform, formerly known as Volta Technology, into a new independent company called Carbeau. The move gives the technology its own structure, investor base and commercial roadmap at a time when carbon utilization is becoming a more closely watched part of the sustainable chemicals sector.

The transaction, announced on 6 July 2026, gives Carbeau €35.2 million in total funding. That figure includes €23.7 million in cash from external investors and an €11.5 million non-cash contribution from Avantium. After the spin-out, Avantium keeps a 32.7% shareholding in the new company.

What Carbeau Will Do

Carbeau’s core technology uses electrochemistry to convert CO₂ into higher-value chemical building blocks. In simple terms, the company wants to treat carbon dioxide not only as an emissions problem, but also as a raw material for useful products.

The platform uses electricity to drive chemical reactions, preferably with renewable power. According to Avantium, the technology can support the production of CO₂-based chemicals and materials with limited to potentially negative carbon emissions, depending on the process, energy source and product pathway.

This is not a small change in framing. Traditional chemical production relies heavily on fossil carbon. Carbeau’s model is built around circular carbon: capture or source CO₂, convert it, and use it again in materials or chemical ingredients.

Why the Funding Matters

The €35.2 million package gives Carbeau a stronger base for scale-up. The investor group combines industrial, financial and regional partners: GKT GmbH, Al Baleed Petrochemical, Invest-NL, NOM and Avantium.

That mix is important because CO₂ conversion is not only a laboratory challenge. It requires process engineering, access to industrial infrastructure, market validation and patient capital. GKT brings industrial process expertise, while Al Baleed Petrochemical adds petrochemical and international market experience. Invest-NL and NOM add Dutch financing and regional development support.

For Avantium, the spin-out also sharpens its own strategic focus. The company continues to prioritize renewable and circular polymer materials, including its FDCA and PEF platform, while Carbeau can concentrate specifically on electrochemical carbon utilization.

The First Target Markets

Carbeau’s initial product focus includes glycolic acid and PLGA, or polylactic-co-glycolic acid. Glycolic acid is used in personal care applications, while PLGA is a compostable polymer with barrier and degradation properties that could make it relevant for selected packaging and materials applications.

Avantium’s technical description of the platform explains that CO₂ can be converted into oxalic acid and then into glycolic acid. That glycolic acid can be combined with lactic acid to make PLGA polyester in existing manufacturing assets. Avantium describes PLGA as a biodegradable polyester with strong barrier and mechanical properties.

The company also states that its CO₂-based platform can produce formic acid, oxalic acid, glycolic acid and carbon monoxide for different applications.

Why Delfzijl Is Part of the Story

Carbeau will be headquartered at Amsterdam Science Park, but it is also planning a pilot plant in Delfzijl, in the north of the Netherlands. The region already has industrial activity and a carbon capture and utilization base, which makes it a logical location for testing scale-up beyond the lab.

This matters because CO₂ conversion technologies need more than chemistry. They need access to carbon dioxide streams, electricity, infrastructure, industrial partners and logistics. A pilot plant can help prove whether the technology is commercially and technically viable at a larger scale.

Avantium’s 2025 annual-report disclosures had already pointed to Volta Technology being ready for a pilot-plant phase and connected the platform to the Province of Groningen’s CCU FWD initiative. A Strategic Spin-Out, Not Just a Rebrand

The creation of Carbeau is more than a name change. It moves Volta Technology from a platform inside Avantium into a dedicated company with its own management, investors and growth mandate.

That structure could help Carbeau move faster toward commercialization. It also allows Avantium to remain involved as a significant shareholder without carrying the full development burden on its own balance sheet.

The name Carbeau combines “carbon” and “beau,” reflecting the company’s stated mission: “Making Carbon Work Beautifully.” The branding is optimistic, but the commercial test will be practical: cost, performance, energy input, carbon footprint and customer adoption.

The Bigger Picture for CO2-Based Materials

Carbon capture and utilization is gaining attention because it offers an alternative route for carbon-intensive sectors that cannot simply eliminate all carbon-containing products. Plastics, coatings, solvents, personal care ingredients and specialty chemicals all require carbon atoms. The key question is where that carbon comes from.

Carbeau’s approach fits into a broader push to replace fossil carbon with renewable, recycled or captured carbon. Avantium describes its Volta platform as part of a circular, carbon-smart future, using captured CO₂ as a new carbon source for the chemical industry.

Still, the sector must be assessed carefully. CO₂-based products are not automatically sustainable. Their climate value depends on electricity sources, process efficiency, product lifetime, end-of-life treatment and whether they replace fossil-based alternatives at meaningful scale.

What to Watch Next

The most important milestone will be the Delfzijl pilot plant. If Carbeau can demonstrate reliable operation, competitive production economics and strong product performance, it could become a notable player in the emerging market for CO₂-derived chemicals and materials.

Investors will also watch how Carbeau converts its technology platform into customer agreements. Glycolic acid and PLGA are sensible starting points because they connect the chemistry to real markets, but commercial adoption will depend on price, certification, performance and supply reliability.

For now, the spin-out gives Carbeau funding, focus and a clearer industrial path. It also gives Avantium a way to keep exposure to carbon utilization while concentrating on its core renewable polymer strategy.

The result is a cleaner corporate structure and a new test case for circular carbon chemistry: can CO₂ become a scalable feedstock for useful, competitive materials rather than remaining only an emissions liability?
