In a major materials-innovation step, Toray Industries, Inc. has developed a recycling technology for carbon-fiber-reinforced plastics (CFRP) that remarkably maintains strength and surface quality of recycled carbon fibers. What the technology does

Traditional methods for recycling CFRP face hurdles: thermosetting resins are highly cross-linked and difficult to break down; fibers often suffer thermal damage; and resin residues hamper reuse. Toray overcame these issues by creating a decomposition agent that breaks down three-dimensionally cross-linked thermosetting resins at lower temperatures than conventional methods.

These nonwovens combine carbon fiber functionality (such as radio-frequency shielding and thermal conductivity) with aesthetic qualities reminiscent of traditional Japanese paper (washi).

Prototype & applications underway

A standout demonstration: a concept car by Mazda Motor Corporation will showcase interior and exterior components made with these recycled‐carbon-fiber nonwovens at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo.

This initiative is part of Toray’s participation in a program run by the Ministry of the Environment (Japan) for fiscal years 2024 through 2025 aimed at establishing a decarbonised and circular economy.
