Revolutionary PET Food Safety Testing Standard Eliminates Hidden Packaging Risks
Revolutionary PET Food Safety Testing Standard Eliminates Hidden Packaging Risks
European packaging leaders have introduced a unified approach to food contact material safety, setting a benchmark for chemical traceability and risk prevention in recycled and virgin plastics.
A Historic Shift in European Food Contact Safety
PETCORE EUROPE, the central trade body representing the entire polyethylene terephthalate (PET) supply chain, has officially launched GeNi. This flagship industry-wide project unites recyclers, resin producers, converters, testing laboratories, and major FMCG brand owners to build a collective defense against chemical contamination in food packaging.
Developed in strategic partnership with chemical testing platform provider KÖR, GeNi creates a neutral, centralized data infrastructure. The platform enables stakeholders to aggregate, anonymize, and analyze analytical testing data gathered across hundreds of production steps. By consolidating these analytical streams into actionable insights, the European PET sector aims to identify chemical anomalies and health risks well before regulatory mandates enforce action. The Critical Gap: Why Traditional Testing Is No Longer Enough
Polyethylene terephthalate remains the dominant polymer for beverage containers and food packaging across Europe. However, the absence of universally accepted international standards for testing food contact substances has left testing laboratories working in isolated silos. Individual facilities frequently apply diverging analytical methodologies, leading to inconsistent baseline measurements and fragmented data.
This structural fragmentation creates blind spots in packaging safety assessments. Without a unified repository of interlaboratory data, cross-referencing findings or detecting subtle trace impurities across complex international supply chains becomes nearly impossible. Consequently, identifying non-intentionally added substances (NIAS)—unintended chemical byproducts or degradation residues—has historically presented severe technical barriers.
Recycled Content Mandates Intensify Safety Scrutiny
The urgency surrounding robust PET food safety testing is driven by strict European sustainability regulations. Under European Union regulations such as EU 2022/1616 on recycled plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with foods, packaging producers must continuously increase recycled PET (rPET) ratios.
While closed-loop recycling is essential for achieving climate targets, introducing post-consumer waste streams into food-grade manufacturing introduces higher chemical complexity. Non-food packaging miscollection, thermal degradation during reprocessing, and legacy additives increase the potential for trace contaminants. GeNi directly addresses these circular economy challenges by equipping the market with standardized, verifiable chemical screening metrics. PET food safety testing
How the GeNi Platform Works
The operational framework of GeNi centers on digital harmonization and data confidentiality. Participating facilities upload their chemical analysis results to KÖR’s secure digital system, known as KÖR LABS. The platform neutralizes proprietary concerns by anonymizing source data while retaining technical parameters necessary for benchmarking.
-
Interlaboratory Benchmarking: Participating testing facilities can benchmark their analytical accuracy and testing precision against peer laboratories across Europe.
-
Method Harmonization: Aggregated data highlights testing discrepancies, enabling experts to refine and standardize analytical protocols across the entire packaging value chain.
-
Early Risk Detection: Advanced trend analysis flags emerging chemical compounds or unexpected NIAS surges before products enter retail distribution channels.
-
Evidence-Based Policy: Shared scientific evidence supports constructive dialogues with European regulatory bodies, including the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and DG SANTE.
Industry Leadership Voices
Highlighting the strategic necessity of collective action, Raphaël Jaumotte, Technical Manager at PETCORE EUROPE, emphasized that GeNi represents a major step forward for cross-sector collaboration. He noted that uniting testing data provides the industry with a clear, end-to-end view of substances across the packaging lifespan, allowing for earlier risk identification and better protection of public health.
Bernd Schwarz, Chief Chemical Officer at KÖR, reinforced the transformative role of data architecture in packaging compliance. Schwarz stated that data must function as a bridge rather than a barrier, explaining that GeNi equips manufacturers with the analytical tools needed to turn disconnected laboratory figures into a comprehensive understanding of packaging contents.
Proactive Protection for the Global Packaging Chain
The introduction of GeNi marks a shift from reactive compliance to proactive quality control in sustainable packaging. Rather than waiting for legislative mandates or consumer warnings regarding emerging chemical risks, the PET packaging sector is taking direct responsibility for food contact verification.
By establishing a standardized evidence base, the European PET industry ensures that high recycled-content goals do not compromise food safety or consumer trust. As regulatory bodies worldwide tighten restrictions on food contact materials, the GeNi framework serves as a scalable model for circular packaging safety across global markets.
