-Groupe Renault and Faurecia to collaborate on hydrogen storage systems for light commercial vehicles

Groupe Renault and Faurecia will collaborate on hydrogen storage systems for hydrogen-powered light commercial vehicles.

Starting at the end of 2021, Faurecia will supply hydrogen storage systems for a first fleet of light commercial vehicles. These systems will be developed and produced at its global center of expertise in Bavans, France. Polymers Biodegradability Recycling Hydrogen

As volumes, increase production will be extended to a new plant dedicated to hydrogen storage systems that Faurecia is building in Allenjoie, France.

This collaboration on hydrogen storage systems is embedded in our strategy to offer market-ready H2 solutions for light commercial vehicles and target over 30% share of this fast-growing market in Europe. It supports the ambition shared with our partner Plug Power to build a unique end-to-end green hydrogen and fuel cell value chain and new value-generating activities in France.

-Plastic scrap prices on the rise

Gains in pricing have been reported for a variety of plastic scrap.

Pricing for natural and mixed-color high-density polyethylene (HDPE) has been increasing to the point where it could test the limits of some buyers, sources say.

Ajit Perera, vice president of postconsumer operations at Talco Plastics Inc., a reprocessor and compounder based in Corona, California, says the rising price of mixed-color HDPE could test demand from some consumers that tend to buy recycled material because of the cost advantage it offers to virgin. “The haggling will happen next month,” he says in mid-February, referring to manufacturers of nursery pots and similar items that are not as committed to using recycled content as other companies are.

Perera says natural HDPE bottle bales are selling for 60 to 65 cents per pound in California, while the material is priced closer to 75 cents per pound on the East Coast where the competition is fiercer.  Polymers Biodegradability Recycling Hydrogen

Mixed-color HDPE bottle bales are selling for 12 to 14 cents in California as of mid-February, a modest increase from the 11 to 13 cents they sold for the previous month, he adds. Prices for mixed-color HDPE bales on the East Coast are higher, Perera says, having reached the mid-20 cent range in mid-February. East Coast mixed-color HDPE bale prices had been in the low 20 cent range since December.

-Shawbrook lends £9m to recycled PET producer, which is tackling single-use plastics

Shawbrook Bank has provided asset finance facilities totalling £9m to Esterform Packaging Ltd and its new food grade recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate (rPET) production business Esterpet Ltd. Polymers Biodegradability Recycling Hydrogen

The funding was used to purchase two Starlinger recoSTAR PET 165 HC iV+ production lines in order to manufacture over 13,000 tonnes of rPET each.

It will also provide funds to build out its non-beverage tooling library as they look to diversify into non-beverage sectors.

This is part of Esterform Packaging’s project to tackle single-use plastics.

A portion of Esterform’s Sherburn in Elmet site in Leeds has also been redeveloped, with a new 18m-high building to house up to three identical rPET convertor lines.

The rPET resulted from those new lines will be supplied to Esterform clients against contracts with customers for use in preform/container production.

The decision to tackle single-use plastics follows the government’s tax on plastic packaging containing less than 30% recycled plastic.

-Newly developed sustainable aviation fuel to reduce emissions by 75 per cent

The certified jet fuel will enable a minimum reduction in carbon emissions of 75 per cent compared to fossil fuel equivalents and remove thousands of tonnes of waste-plastics from the environment every year. Polymers Biodegradability Recycling Hydrogen

Sustainable and green-energy company, Clean Planet Energy, have announced a breakthrough product in their mission to significantly reduce carbon emissions in fossil-fuel led transport.

Branded as ‘Clean Planet Air’, the certified kerosene/ jet fuel can be used as a direct replacement for the fossil fuel equivalent, yet it reduces CO2 emissions by a minimum of 75 per cent in comparison, whilst removing thousands of tonnes of waste-plastics from the environment every year.

“On an average day across the world (pre-COVID-19), you would expect 75,000 planes to take-off. The aviation industry is making great strides to be greener and cleaner, but, still, it is calculated by the European EEA that a domestic flight, for every 1,000km travelled (the average distance between the UK and Spain) will release 250kg of new CO2 emissions for every economy passenger onboard.

-Australia’s largest PET recycling plant ahead of schedule

Australia’s largest PET recycling plant is now under construction in Albury-Wodonga, after joint venture partners Pact Group HoldingsAsahi Beverages and Cleanaway Waste Management broke ground on the A$45 million (US$32m) site.

Located in New South Wales, the plant is expected to be fully operational by October, two months ahead of schedule, and just  14 months after the three firms entered the joint venture. The facility will trade as Circular Plastics Australia PET.

The raw plastics material that the new plant will recycle each year is equivalent to one billion 600ml PET bottles and will be used to produce more than 20,000 tonnes per annum of new recycled PET bottles and food packaging, making it the largest end-to-end rPET plant in Australia.

It will increase the amount of locally sourced and recycled PET produced in Australia by two thirds – from around 30,000tpa currently to more than 50,000tpa according to Pact Group.
