Releaf PEF recycling Japan – Avantium’s Releaf® PEF Gains Key Recycling Approval in Japan

Avantium N.V., the Dutch pioneer in renewable and circular polymer materials, has reached another major milestone in sustainable packaging. Its plant-based plastic, branded Releaf®, has officially received CPBR (Council for PET Bottle Recycling) approval for recycling within Japan’s PET bottle stream.

This endorsement allows Releaf®—made from Avantium’s proprietary YXY® Technology—to be used in multilayer PET bottles that can fully integrate into Japan’s highly efficient recycling infrastructure. For beverage producers, it marks a significant opportunity to move toward renewable, recyclable packaging without compromising performance or recyclability.  Releaf PEF recycling Japan

What CPBR Approval Means

The Council for PET Bottle Recycling (CPBR) is Japan’s key authority overseeing the recyclability of PET bottles. It sets voluntary design standards and rigorously evaluates new packaging materials to ensure seamless compatibility with Japan’s established bottle-to-bottle recycling systems.

Without CPBR approval, new plastics cannot enter the official PET recycling stream. This process protects the integrity of Japan’s recycling ecosystem, which is among the most advanced in the world. Releaf PEF recycling Japan

After a detailed technical review, CPBR confirmed that Avantium’s PEF can be safely recycled within the PET stream at concentrations of up to 10 percent by weight. The evaluation covered:

  • Physical and chemical compatibility tests

  • Processability and thermal performance analyses

  • Compliance with Japan’s food-contact Positive List system

  • Standards from the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare

  • FDA food-safety regulations

The result: bottles containing PEF received an “A” recyclability rating, representing full suitability for bottle-to-bottle recycling. Releaf PEF recycling Japan

A Global Step Toward Circular Packaging

This Japanese approval follows similar recycling recognitions from the European PET Bottle Platform (EPBP) in Europe and the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) in the United States. Together, these endorsements validate Releaf® as a truly global, circular material for beverage packaging. Releaf PEF recycling Japan

With the CPBR’s confirmation, brand owners and converters can confidently adopt PEF as a high-barrier layer in PET bottles. The technology not only extends shelf life and enhances product protection but also enables producers to reduce their reliance on fossil-based plastics.

For the beverage industry, this development aligns perfectly with Japan’s and the world’s shift toward decarbonisation, recyclability, and renewable resource use.

Industry Collaboration and Innovation

Yuzhong Chen, Avantium’s Business Development Manager Asia, expressed gratitude to Japanese industry partners for their support throughout the CPBR evaluation process. Releaf PEF recycling Japan

Their technical collaboration was vital in demonstrating that Releaf® PEF performs flawlessly in recycling environments while maintaining high material quality.

The cooperation reflects a shared vision between Avantium and Japanese packaging companies—to advance circular, plant-based solutions that meet strict recycling and safety standards.

What Makes Releaf® PEF Different

  • Plant-Based Origin: Releaf® is made entirely from renewable feedstocks rather than fossil resources. Releaf PEF recycling Japan

  • Superior Barrier Performance: It provides excellent protection against oxygen and CO₂, extending product freshness.

  • Full Recyclability: Now validated in Japan, Europe, and the USA, Releaf® integrates into existing PET recycling systems.

  • Circular Economy Alignment: PEF supports closed-loop recycling and reduces carbon emissions compared to conventional plastics.

By enabling manufacturers to blend PEF with PET, Avantium bridges the gap between innovation and infrastructure, offering a scalable path toward sustainable packaging.

A Milestone for Sustainable Materials

The CPBR approval strengthens Avantium’s position as a leader in renewable polymers and underlines growing international acceptance of PEF as a next-generation packaging material. It reinforces the company’s commitment to helping global brands and consumers transition to a fully circular, plant-based packaging economy.

With regulatory and industry support expanding across major markets, Releaf® PEF is poised to become a cornerstone of the future of sustainable packaging—one that balances performance, safety, and environmental responsibility.

Bio-based materials – An exciting advancement is the development of polyethylene furanoate (PEF), made from a sugar-derived compound known as FDCA. PEF not only rivals the commonly used PET plastic but also outperforms it in strength, barrier protection, and recyclability—making it a strong contender for sportswear, outerwear, and sustainable packaging
