-NOVA Chemicals and Enerkem advance commercialization of chemical recycling technology
NOVA Chemicals Corporation and Enerkem Inc. are advancing the companies’ energy-efficient chemical recycling technology to the pilot stage in Edmonton, Alberta, thanks in part to CDN$4.5 million in funding from Alberta Innovates.
The funding, provided through Alberta Innovates’ Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction (“TIER”) economic recovery program, has enabled the companies to expedite the construction of a pilot-scale reactor system that converts syngas produced from used, non-recyclable and non-compostable plastics to feedstocks for virgin-grade plastics. The team has been working to achieve lower greenhouse gas emissions while accelerating the upgrading process for waste materials.
“By taking waste streams that are otherwise non-recyclable, we can complement mechanical recycling efforts and provide an important solution to close the gap between recycling targets and the important role plastics play in our daily lives,” said Michel Chornet, executive vice president of engineering, innovation, and operations at Enerkem. “The project aims to expand the types of materials that can be recycled and increase recycling rates while reducing emissions from incineration and landfill and keeping plastic out of the environment. It is a significant step in realizing the vision of the circular economy.”
-Prices for finished products from polymers increased in March by 10-50% in Russia
Prices for plastic products and polymer building materials rose by 10% in March, and in some segments to 50%, despite the freezing of prices for raw materials – basic polymers, Kommersant reports. Chemical-recycling – Flexible-R-LDPE-plant
This is explained both by the growth of real costs for the maintenance of imported equipment and the purchase of imported raw materials, and by the fact that plastic processors expect the situation to worsen. Sources in the market fear that further price increases may attract the attention of the regulator.
Manufacturers of polymer packaging and other plastic processing products have raised the prices of their goods by 10-50% since February, and this growth may continue in April. Prices for complex types of polymer pipes, complex building and thermal insulation materials increased most significantly. Sources explain this by the rise in the cost of servicing imported equipment and the purchase of foreign components, rising bank rates and fears of a further deterioration of the situation. At the same time, the cost of simple polymer pipes for housing and communal services and gasification remained at the level of February.
Dmitry Leonov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the Rusprodsoyuz Association, estimates the current increase in prices for polyethylene film and polypropylene bags at the level of 50% year-on-year. According to him, for packaging that is purchased abroad, many suppliers have transferred calculations to prepayment in foreign currency: for a month, on average, prices increased by 15-20%. The cost of some types of packaging, for example, flexible, increased by 42-45% in euros. Suppliers are forced to increase their costs for packaging, regardless of the place of its production, mr. Leonov notes. Chemical-recycling – Flexible-R-LDPE-plant
As explained by the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the manufacturer of BOPP film “Waterfall” Konstantin Kuzin, first of all, prices are actively raised by small producers who cannot compensate for growing costs, primarily for raw materials and components, some of which are imported. The top manager notes that the industry needs logistical and financial adaptation, which can take up to six months.
