Sidel has strengthened its role in sustainable cosmetic packaging by delivering a PET peroxide resistant bottle system to Italian hair care manufacturer Farmavita

The solution allows the company to shift away from traditional HDPE containers and adopt on-site PET bottle production for hydrogen peroxide-based products.

Hydrogen peroxide is widely used in professional hair care formulations, particularly in coloring and bleaching products. However, its chemical nature can cause internal pressure buildup during transport and storage. This pressure often leads to deformation of standard HDPE bottles, especially at the base, compromising both functionality and shelf appearance.  PET peroxide resistant bottle system

The PET peroxide resistant bottle system supplied by Sidel directly addresses these challenges. The bottle base features a reinforced, structured design that improves resistance to collapse and deformation. This ensures greater stability during filling, logistics, and retail display, while maintaining a premium look and feel that aligns with professional hair care branding.

Packaging appearance plays a critical role in consumer perception. For Farmavita, ensuring that bottles remain visually appealing throughout their lifecycle is essential to maintaining brand value. To support this transition, Sidel installed an EvoBLOW stretch blow molding machine directly at Farmavita’s production facility

Bringing bottle manufacturing in-house reduces dependence on external suppliers and simplifies logistics. It also minimizes storage requirements for empty containers and lowers emissions linked to transportation.

On-site production delivers sustainability benefits beyond logistics. PET requires lower blowing temperatures than HDPE, resulting in reduced energy consumption during manufacturing. This aligns with Farmavita’s objective to lower the environmental footprint of its operations while maintaining high packaging performance standards.

Farmavita selected the Sidel EvoBLOW Regular SBO 6, which produces up to 7,200 bottles per hour in the one-liter format. To meet the specific requirements of white, titanium dioxide-colored PET preforms, the system was customized with two additional oven heating modules.  PET peroxide resistant bottle system

Colored PET preforms, particularly those containing titanium dioxide, require longer and more controlled heating to ensure proper material distribution. The additional oven modules increase heating time while allowing lower temperatures. This improves stretching behavior and results in a more uniform bottle wall, which is essential for pressure resistance and long-term stability.

The PET peroxide resistant bottle system also delivers notable energy efficiency gains. According to Sidel, the optimized heating process reduces ventilation needs and leads to an estimated ten percent reduction in energy consumption. The system is further equipped with an Air Recovery feature that lowers compressed air use by approximately thirty percent.

Despite the added heating modules, Sidel optimized the machine layout to fit within Farmavita’s limited production space

A compact, customized preform feeder was integrated to minimize the footprint. The infeed rail was also adapted to accommodate very small preform neck rings, ensuring smooth and reliable operation.

Before installation, Sidel conducted dedicated packaging development sessions at its Packaging Excellence Centre in France. These trials focused on validating the blowing process, optimizing material behavior, and ensuring that the PET peroxide resistant bottle system met performance expectations under real production and storage conditions.

The collaboration between Sidel and Farmavita resulted in a bespoke packaging solution tailored to colored PET, peroxide resistance, and elevated visual quality. This approach highlights the importance of combining material science, process engineering, and packaging design when transitioning from HDPE to PET in demanding applications.

Looking ahead, Farmavita is evaluating the integration of additional bottle formats, including smaller 100 milliliter containers. Producing these formats in-house would further reduce reliance on external converters, lower packaging and transport costs, and enhance operational flexibility.

The scalability of the PET peroxide resistant bottle system supports future product expansion while maintaining consistent quality and sustainability performance. This makes the solution suitable for both current needs and long-term growth strategies.
