-As Russell leaves ACC, he sees plastics recycling investments paying off

Steve Russell, who is stepping down after 12 years heading one of the plastics industry’s two main trade groups in Washington, has a prediction on his way out: Investments in recycling will, in a few years, start to reap rewards for addressing plastic waste challenges. Russell has led the plastics division of the American Chemistry Council since 2007, giving him a key role in developing the industry’s strategy. ACC announced Dec. 5 that he is stepping down in February, a decision Russell said he made for personal reasons.

-U.S.-led pressure fractures as China, Russia push for N.Korea sanctions relief

A proposal by China and Russia to ease U.N. sanctions on North Korea increases pressure on the United States and signals what is the likely end of unified efforts to persuade Pyongyang to give up its growing nuclear and missile arsenal.

On Monday China and Russia proposed that the United Nations Security Council lift a ban on North Korea exporting statues, seafood and textiles, and ease restrictions on infrastructure projects and North Koreans working overseas, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters.Petrochemical Biorecycling Automotive Seating

-EU chems 2020 output expected flat after 1% decline in 2019 – Cefic

EU chemicals production is expected to have fallen 1% in 2019, year on year, with no growth expected in 2020 as a hostile trade environment and political uncertainty continue to weigh on demand, EU trade group Cefic said on Tuesday.

Sector demand this year was weakened by slower macroeconomic growth, trade conflicts and Brexit uncertainty, all sapping output in key end markets including the automotive and electrical appliances sectors. Petrochemical Biorecycling Automotive Seating

Construction output has proven a brighter spot for producers as low interest rates and high infrastructure demand allowed the sector healthy growth in output, which is expected to continue into next year.

-New Anellotech technology tackles plastics pollution by recycling plastic waste into chemicals

Sustainable technology company Anellotech is significantly expanding its programme with Plas-TCatTM, a new process technology aiming to convert a wide range of plastic waste directly into chemicals – which can then be used to make new, virgin plastics.

95 per cent of plastic packaging material is annually lost to the economy after a single use and often ends up in combustors, landfills or polluting the ocean. By leveraging Anellotech’s existing Bio-TCatTM process – which converts biomass into bio-based chemicals and biofuels – Plas-TCat has demonstrated encouraging results in lab studies using pure plastics.Petrochemical Biorecycling Automotive Seating

-plastship 2.0 closes the loop for recycled plastics

A transparent, joint approach optimises plastics recycling, as everyone agreed at the International Recycling Forum in Wiesbaden, Germany, where 120 delegates from 22 countries representing businesses, associations and academia met in November.

It is not always possible to replace or supplement virgin material with recycled pellets since no comparable data about their service and moulding characteristics is available. Networks capable of sourcing compliant materials can help, though, according to plastship GmbH MD Andreas Bastian and Co-MD Konstantin Humm.

Bastian said: “There are many good approaches to collecting plastic scrap from various sectors and to establishing closed loops. Some improvements are also being made in terms of the quality of post-consumer recycled materials, but we still haven’t arrived at uniform standards.Petrochemical Biorecycling Automotive Seating
