Sabic, the largest Saudi petrochemical company, has raised the contract price of monoethylene glycol (MEG) to supply material to the Asian market in October at USD10 per tonne compared to the September price level, ICIS source in the company said.

Previous studies by various research institutes have showed promising results for cleaning up oil spills using carbon nanotubes, sawdust, cellulose, and fern-inspired nano-hair. New study reported that converted waste products from industry is responsible for polluting oceans and sea water. Scientists from Flinders University used by-products of the petroleum and refining industries to create an absorbent polymer, which can clear crude oil from sea water.
-Krones acquires Chinese process technology business
German machinery provider Krones has acquired the business operations and assets of Shanghai Xiantong Equipment Installation as part of a strategy to expand its global footprint.
The Chinese company has been a partner and supplier to Krones in the field of process technology for several decades, with Krones Taicang partnering with Xiantong on the first MicroCube compact brewhouse.
-Hengli Sets Out Plans to Become World’s Largest PTA Producer
Hengli Petrochemical aims to become the biggest maker of purified terephthalic acid globally as the Chinese chemical giant looks to benefit from sharp increases in the price of the high-performance plastic raw material seen in recent months.
Hengli has put forward a CNY3 billion (USD436 million) plan to boost annual output by 2.5 million tons, Xinhua News Agency-backed Securities Daily reported today. The Dalian-based firm previously proposed a 2.5 million tons increase in output in April as part of a separate expansion plan.

Sleeve packs made using EconCore’s honeycomb technology have set a new performance standard for the packaging industry, results from a recent compression test show.
The test, carried out by an independent packaging institute in accordance with ISO 844 guidelines, analysed the maximum compressive loading capacity of reusable sleeve packs made using honeycomb core materials and various other core structures generally referred to as cup-shaped core structures. All packaging products tested had panel weight of 3000 g/m², same dimensions in height, width and depth and were preconditioned for 24 hours.

An independent industry survey has revealed that advances in manufacturing has had the biggest influence on packaging over the last 30 years, but sustainability will be key to future trends.
The survey was commissioned by brand empowerment specialist API Group and focused on gaining insight from brand owners and packaging designers. It revealed that 54% of industry professionals believe manufacturing techniques have had the biggest impact on packaging trends in the last three decades. A further 48% believe material developments, such as advances in foils, have also contributed heavily to trend directions.

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Oil prices edged lower on Monday as investors focused on deepening trade tension between the U.S. and China that is expected to dent global crude demand, but losses were limited as the market weighed potential supply tightening due to Iran sanctions.
-New material makes Russian military helmets invisible
A new textile material has been recently designed by the Russian military and industrial corporation Rostec to mask soldiers and military equipment, according to Rostec chief Sergei Chemezov.
According to Chemezov, the new material has chameleon like properties and can adapt to the colour of the environment. The company expects that at the initial stage the new development will be used for the needs of the Russian military, with a range of other applications being significantly expanded at a later date.
The level of investment in the design of the new textile material has not been disclosed, however, sources close to Rostec, say it could be in the range of US$100-150 million.

Halfway through her new book, Bethany McLean offers an epitaph for the late Aubrey McClendon, one of the pioneers of the fracking boom.
McClendon’s company, Chesapeake Energy Corp., had become the second-largest U.S. gas producer after Exxon Mobil Corp., but he was forced out as CEO after complaints about his lavish perks and the company’s debt load. He died in a car accident in 2016, a day after being indicted on bid-rigging charges, which were later dropped (Energywire, March 3, 2016).
“Is Chesapeake the model for this business? It changes the world but it ends in tears?” McLean quotes a hedge fund manager as asking.

-Mubadala to list 25% of Cepsa on Spanish stock exchange
Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund Mubadala, which fully controls Cepsa, announced on Monday its intention to float 25% of the Spanish energy and petrochemicals major on the country’s stock exchange before the end of the year.
Together with fully-listed Repsol, Cepsa is one of the largest Spanish oil players, operating two refineries in the country.
Within petrochemicals, Cepsa has operations in Spain, Germany, China, Indonesia, Canada, Nigeria and Brazil.
-New US tariffs on China would include many petrochemicals
Houston — The Trump administration’s latest round of proposed tariffs on Chinese goods includes a long string of petrochemicals, both raw materials and items made from plastic resins.
The list of $200 billion in Chinese goods disclosed this week would be subject to a 10% tariff if implemented amid growing trade tensions between the US and China. Last Friday, the US implemented $34 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods, and China retaliated with the same value of taxes on US imports, largely agricultural crops and automobiles.
The US is slated to impose another $16 billion in tariffs on Chinese goods late next week, and China has said it will retaliate in kind — a second list of the same value that includes crude oil and gasoline as well as two plastic resins, polyvinyl chloride and low-density polyethylene, used to make items like vinyl flooring and plastic tubs, respectively.
