Can corn, sugar cane and other starch-rich sources replace crude oil when making plastics? In many cases, yes, it is technically possible. But of course the question is more complex than that.

What is the difference between bioplastics and biobased plastics?

The concept “bioplastics” raises issues as it suggests that the polymer is more environmentally friendly, and/or that it’s derived from biomass only. That’s why some advocate using the term “biobased plastics” or “biobased polymers” when referring to plastics derived from renewable biomass, including when they are mixed with petroleum-based plastics.

US April propylene contract prices settled at a rollover from the prior month for a majority of the market amid conflicting pressures of ample supplies and higher costs, sources confirmed late on Thursday.

The April settlement keeps contract prices for polymer-grade propylene (PGP) at 35.5 cents/lb ($783/tonne) and for chemical-grade propylene (CGP) at 34.0 cents/lb.

The rollover follows five months of consecutive declines, which had been due to increased production levels and building supply.

US propylene inventories have declined from an all-time high of 6.6m bbl in February, but remain above historical levels and continue to keep downward pressure on the market.

  • More plastic bags than fish: East Asia’s new environmental threat

In March 2019, the fourth Session of the UN Environment Assembly convened in Kenya to discuss the environmental and climate challenges outlined in the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 agenda.

The protection of oceans with a specific focus on curbing marine plastic pollution was among the points discussed.

Protecting marine environments is a growing priority in East Asia. In 2016, the World Economic Forum predicted that there would be more ocean plastic waste than fish by 2050 without effective intervention.

The conference adopted resolutions on promoting sustainable development, including cooperation in reducing marine plastic debris.

Luwa is set to display optimal solutions in air technology at ITMA 2019 exhibition, in hall H8.1, booth A210. Luwa offers competent and extensive know-how – for air handling, air direction, air cleaning, air disposal as well as heat recovery.

Evian will trial a collapsible water dispenser made of recycled plastic, which is as “thin and light as a bubble” in a bid to reduce its plastic packaging.

Called Renew, the at-home appliance, which stores up to five litres of Evian mineral water, contracts when water is consumed, taking on a new shape after every use.

Part of wider environmental pledges

The thin skin of the dispenser’s bubble-like top is made using 66 per cent less plastic than a standard 1.5 litre Evian bottle.

Unlike Evian’s regular water bottles, this skin is made from 100 per cent recycled plastic. Last year the brand announced its intention that all its water bottles will be made solely from recycled plastic by 2025.

Norway has set an impressive example for the rest of the world to follow with its comprehensive recycling programme. The latest figures show that it is now actively recycling 97% of all plastic bottles sold in the country, attracting international attention about how other nations can mimic its scheme to produce similarly impressive results in their homeland as well.

Recycling first came to the fore in Norway at the beginning of the 20th century, when glass bottles were the targeted medium. However, the rising popularity of plastic over the last 50 years has seen this ubiquitous but dangerous product take centre stage as public enemy number one when it comes to unnecessary waste – and the Scandinavian model is producing outstanding results.

The Panhandle plans to be the next Alaska region to give new life to old fishing gear by sending it to plastic recycling centers.

The tons of nets and lines piled up in local lots and landfills will become the raw material for soda bottles, cell phone cases, sunglasses, skateboards, swimsuits and more.

Juneau, Haines, Petersburg and possibly Sitka have partnered with Net Your Problem to launch an effort this year to send old or derelict seine and gillnets to a recycler in Richmond, British Columbia.

Itema, the Italian manufacturer of best-in-class weaving machines, spare parts and integrated services, will exhibit at Techtextil in Frankfurt from May 14th to 17th (Hall 3.0, D05) and announces an important contribution for the sector.

In fact, Itema will seize the opportunity of the worldwide technical textiles flagship event to launch Itematech, the new company exclusively dedicated to producing weaving machines for the benefit of technical fabrics weavers.

Oil prices surge on Saudi shipment drops. On Thursday oil prices turns slightly higher after a cut in crude exports from major exporter Saudi Arabia and lower US stockpiles.

Brent crude futures grew 35 cents to at $71.97 a barrel compared to their Wednesday’s five-month high of $72.27. The figures show Brent’s fourth consecutive weekly gain in the market. Brent crude gained 4 cents for the week.

According to a report, Saudi Arabia’s crude oil exports also saw a drop of 277,000 barrels per day to 7 million bpd in February.

At home, at work, on the street, in the sky, on the water, even in space, technical textiles and nonwovens are swinging towards ever higher performances in amazing applications.

Versatile and light, but sometimes stronger than metal, these materials of the future gain their superpowers from the interaction of precisely coordinated textile systems.

At Techtextil in Frankfurt am Main from May 14 to 17, 2019 in Hall 3, B06, Oerlikon will be showing chemical fiber applications made of polyester, polypropylene and Co. and what they can do in these fields.

However, these exhibits are only a communicative means to an end, as Oerlikon is primarily interested in placing the associated machinery and plant solutions at the centre of discussions with trade fair visitors.

Austrian fiber company Lenzing Group, best known for its brands Tencel, Veocel and EcoVero, joined forces with Belgian chemical group Solvay to create a new sustainable fabric combining Tencel-branded lyocell fibers and Solvay’s Amni Soul Eco, the first polyamide 6.6 yarn designed to decompose within 5 years (other fibers can take decades to decompose). The result, the two companies claim, is a sustainable fabric that offers greater breathability and abrasion resistance for the activewear market.

FashionUnited spoke with Lenzing’s Vice President of Global Business Management, Florian Heubrandner, to learn more about the new product.

Southeast Asian polyethylene (PE) import market remains stable across all grades in the week but expectations of tighter regional supply might provide support in the near term.

Trade in the region, particularly in Indonesia and Thailand, was largely subdued amid the holiday-shortened week with limited deals done.

Indonesia held its presidential and parliamentary elections on 17 April, while Good Friday is celebrated in Indonesia as well as in the Philippines.

Thailand market reopened to a slow start in the week after a week-long Songkran holiday to celebrate Thai New Year from 13 April to 17 April.

The United States reimposed sanctions on Iran in November after pulling out of a 2015 nuclear accord between Tehran and six world powers. Those sanctions have already more than halved Iranian oil exports, the country’s main source of revenue.

Shipments are averaging below 1 million barrels per day (bpd) so far this month, according to Refinitiv Eikon data and two other companies that track such exports and declined to be identified. That’s lower than at least 1.1 million bpd as estimated for March.

The latest drop deepens supply losses resulting from an OPEC-led global agreement to cut oil production and US sanctions on another OPEC member, Venezuela.

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], Apr 20 (ANI): Reliance Industries on Saturday denied involvement in any arrangements that lead to cash payments for oil supplies to Venezuelan government oil company PDVSA via third parties.

Reports suggesting that Reliance is involved in an arrangement that leads to cash payment for oil supplies to PDVSA via third parties are ‘false and reckless,’ it said in a statement, adding the oil refining major is not in violation of any sanctions imposed by the United States.

One year after becoming a certified B Corporation, Athleta is continuing as a leader in sustainable performance apparel, sharing in its April catalog that 60 per cent of its materials are now made with sustainable fibres.

In addition to sustainable innovation in its product, Athleta has established partnerships to help make impact at scale.

The brand has worked aggressively to increase the sustainability in its line by sourcing materials including recycled polyester and nylon, Tencel Modal, Tencel Lyocell, and organic cotton; and using more efficient fabric dyeing and finishing techniques.

Recycled polyester alone diverted the equivalent of more than 38 million plastic bottles from landfills since 2014.

Sustainable materials have also carried into Athleta Girls, reaching 69 per cent of the styles in the upcoming summer collection.

Baystreet.ca) In more proof that U.S. oil production is continuing to alter global oil markets, Russia’s finance minister Anton Siluanov said on Saturday that Russia and OPEC might decide to increase production to fight for market share with the U.S. His remarks were first covered by Russia’s Tass News Agency.

Siluanov said that lower oil prices would then have a negative impact on U.S. oil production, an argument that was also made as far back as late 2014 when the Saudis sought to drive U.S. producers out of business by opening the oil production spigots in spite of an already flooded global oil market.

Dow Chemical and Vietnamese industrial park developer Deep C have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to build the first road using recycled plastics at the Deep C Industrial Complex in Haiphong City in Vietnam. The project aims to divert post-use flexible packaging from becoming litter or entering a landfill, while also creating more durable, longer-lasting roads.

Deep C was founded in 1997 by Belgian (Rent-A-Port, Ackermans-Van Haaren) and Vietnamese (Hai Phong People’s Committee) shareholders and is one of the leading industrial park developers in Vietnam with over 3000 Ha of land and ready-built-factories for lease in Haiphong and Quang Ninh Province.
