US China trade war -Despite the US and China Declaring a Trade Truce, Deep Economic Rivalries, Technology Tensions, and Tariff Battles Show That Real Global Peace Still Remains Elusive 30-10-2025

US China trade war – The United States and China have announced a truce in their trade conflict, offering a brief moment of calm.

However, this pause does not equate to resolution — the fundamental economic and strategic issues between the two super-powers remain largely untouched.

At a recent high-level meeting, leaders from both sides emphasised the relief of immediate tensions, but deeper structural issues remain. The truce marks a de-escalation of cross-retaliatory tariffs and trade measures rather than a full-scale settlement.

A key symbol of this agreement was a shortened meeting time — around 100 minutes rather than the expected three to four hours. Stakes were lower than many anticipated, signalling that negotiators focused on confirming previously agreed measures rather than addressing fresh topics. US China trade war

One of the first visible outcomes is the resumption of soybean imports by China, a positive step for US farmers and the US administration. China had paused purchases for months, and this recommencement helps domestic constituencies in the US. But this act should be seen as a symbolic “fresh start” rather than a full-scale relaunch of trade. US China trade war

Additional measures included the cancellation of planned extra tariffs on Chinese goods, and a one-year postponement of port duties targeting Chinese shipping. China reciprocated by withdrawing retaliatory duties in the same sector. In a notable move, the US agreed to reduce tariffs linked to the fentanyl dispute (from 20 % to 10 %) after China pledged decisive action against relevant chemical exports.

The technology and rare-earth sectors remain front and centre of the dispute.

The US announced that China will suspend for one year its planned export restrictions on materials essential to electronics, green-tech and defence industries. In return, the US appears to allow the sale of certain advanced chips from US firms into China. Washington also pledged to pause the extension of software export controls to subsidiaries of sanctioned Chinese firms for one year. These concessions are limited in time, underscoring that both sides view them as temporary.

The temporary nature of these measures confirms that many fronts remain open. China has demonstrated it can modulate rare-earth shipments even without new licensing systems. Meanwhile the US retains broad restrictions on technology supply chains. These factors hint that the contest remains far from over. US China trade war

Notably omitted from the meeting were two of the most contentious issues: the persistent trade imbalance between the US and China and Beijing’s over-capacity in production. Also unaddressed was the status of Taiwan, a strategic variable in US-China relations that often surfaces in bilateral meetings.

Rather than tackling the most divisive issues, both sides appear to have chosen lower-risk steps to ensure the resumption of dialogue at the highest level. Even on the war in Ukraine, where tensions might have emerged over secondary sanctions, no substantive commitments were made. The US leader emphasised a “very soon” agreement with China on working together, but admitted that lasting peace will not be easy. US China trade war

China’s state media quoted its leader as noting that tariff disputes have not defeated China and that the country has prepared measures to shield itself from future trade turbulence. The message: the truce may be in place, but China retains contingency plans.

Both sides announced possible bilateral meetings in 2026, signalling a desire to keep channels open and potentially agree on more structured deals. The planned follow-up visits send a message to markets, companies and domestic audiences that this truce may be a prelude to deeper engagement or at least a stabilization of ongoing rivalry. In sum, the truce between the US and China provides welcome breathing room. But without addressing the root causes — trade imbalances, technology competition, supply-chain control and strategic over‐capacity — the arrangement remains provisional. A durable peace remains distant. US China trade war
