Dangote polypropylene expansion – Nigeria Gains Major Industrial Boost as Dangote Announces Ambitious Polypropylene Expansion Plan Transforming Local Production Capacity and Strengthening Regional Energy Security by 2028 01-12-2025
Dangote polypropylene expansion
Nigeria is preparing for a significant surge in industrial capability as the Dangote Group sets an ambitious plan to triple its polypropylene (PP) production capacity. This development forms part of a broader strategy to expand the Dangote refinery complex and strengthen the country’s position as a major regional player in petrochemicals, refining, and agriculture. The project is expected to reshape supply chains, drive industrial growth, and play an essential role in improving Nigeria’s long-term energy security. The centerpiece of this strategy is the Dangote polypropylene expansion, which aims to deliver major economic benefits by 2028.
At the core of the initiative is the decision to license Honeywell’s UOP technology to produce an additional 750,000 tonnes of propylene feedstock each year. This advanced technology will enable more efficient production, higher output quality, and a more reliable supply of raw materials for polypropylene manufacturing. By securing this technology partnership, Dangote is taking steps that align with global best practices in petrochemical manufacturing. The adoption of the UOP platform ensures that the Dangote polypropylene expansion will meet both local demand and international standards.
Currently, the Dangote refinery produces around 900,000 tonnes of polypropylene per year. The new expansion plan seeks to increase that figure to an impressive 2.4 million tonnes annually. This dramatic scale-up plays a key role in the company’s broader goal to increase the overall refining capacity of the Dangote complex to 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028. Achieving this target will substantially reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuels and petrochemicals, while supporting related industries such as linear alkylbenzene production. Each of these developments works together to strengthen the industrial ecosystem and increase manufacturing resilience. These improvements highlight the strategic importance of the Dangote polypropylene expansion for the national economy.
Beyond refining and petrochemicals, Dangote is also expanding its activities in the agricultural sector. Dangote Fertiliser Limited (DFL) has announced a major project to increase granulated urea production from 2.65 million tonnes annually to a remarkable 8 million tonnes. The planned complex will be located in Lekki, directly along the Atlantic Ocean, providing logistical advantages for both domestic distribution and export activities. DFL will install four new production lines that make use of UFT granulation technology developed by Thyssenkrupp Uhde of Germany. This technology is known for producing high-quality, free-flowing urea granules that are ideal for modern farming practices. These expansions further support the overall vision behind the Dangote polypropylene expansion, creating a more diversified and secure industrial base for Nigeria.
The timing of these investments is strategic. Nigeria faces increasing demand for industrial raw materials, consumer products, and energy supplies. Local manufacturing sectors often rely heavily on imported petrochemicals due to insufficient domestic capacity. By tripling polypropylene output and significantly expanding fertiliser production, Dangote is addressing critical supply gaps. This reduces pressure on foreign exchange reserves, supports local manufacturing, and positions Nigeria as a competitive exporter of high-value industrial products. The Dangote polypropylene expansion plays a central role in achieving these objectives by ensuring a stable and scalable feedstock supply.
From a regional perspective, the expanded production capacity offers substantial benefits to West Africa and the broader continent. Neighbouring markets often struggle with supply instability and high costs associated with imported petrochemicals. With Dangote’s upgraded facilities coming online, these markets will gain access to more consistent and competitively priced polypropylene and fertiliser products. This improved accessibility encourages industrial development across the region, increases market integration, and promotes economic diversification. Through the Dangote polypropylene expansion, Nigeria is taking a leadership role in shaping regional industrial growth.
By 2028, when the refinery expansion and the associated polypropylene upgrades are scheduled for completion, Nigeria will be better positioned to manage domestic energy needs while supporting industrial production across multiple sectors. Dangote’s strategic investments represent one of the most significant industrial commitments in Africa, combining advanced technology partnerships, large-scale manufacturing, and long-term economic planning. The Dangote polypropylene expansion stands at the center of this vision, providing the foundation for sustained industrial growth, enhanced energy security, and stronger regional competitiveness.
