-THROWING AWAY THE FUTURE: HOW COMPANIES STILL HAVE IT WRONG ON PLASTIC POLLUTION “SOLUTIONS”
There has been a wave of public concern about the global plastic pollution crisis, heightened by the growing scientific evidence about its ecological and social impacts.
As a result, more and more people from all around the world are taking action themselves, and turning to solutions that most large companies have so far failed to implement: rejecting cheap, throwaway plastic packaging, and demanding reusable and refillable options for everyday goods.
Small businesses are developing many inspiring, innovative (and sometimes basic, common sense) packaging methods and models.
There is a global movement to create a sustainable world with a culture focused on reusables, not disposables
-Bringing sustainability and fibre transparency to consumers
Jürgen Eizinger, Vice President of Global Business Management Nonwovens. © LenzingLast month, Lenzing announced the introduction of Eco Care technology, designed to enhance the production of eco-friendly viscose fibres for the nonwovens industry. It is said to generate up to 50% lower emissions and water impact, compared to generic viscose.
Innovation in Textiles spoke to Jürgen Eizinger, Vice President of Global Business Management Nonwovens, Lenzing, about the new technology.
-Sugarcane Based PET Bottles Market Poised to Expand at a Robust Pace Over 2019-2029
Sugarcane Based PET Bottles Market: Overview
Sugarcane based bottle is the biopolymer packaging solution which is manufactured from bagasse, the fibrous material left behind after extracting sugarcane juice.
These bottles are recognized as ‘Green Polyethylene bottles’ which has zero harmful impact on the environment.
The sugarcane is effectively capturing CO2 i.e., 1 kilogram of green plastic helps to remove approximately 3.09 kilograms of CO2 from the air.
As the sugarcane based PET bottles are Bisphenol A (BPA) free, the demand for these bottles is consistently increasing across the world.
-BASF commits to chemical recycling
Chemical giant BASF is to invest €20 million into a partnership with a Norwegian pyrolysis specialist to boost the chemical recycling of mixed plastic waste.
Quantafuel’s expertise in the integrated process of pyrolysis and purification will be optimised so the output can used as feedstock in chemical production. In a second step, Quantafuel will license the technology to other parties. The Oslo-based company plans a pyrolysis and purification plant with a capacity of approximately 16 000 tonnes per year at Skive, Denmark, with building work starting this year.
BASF will have first refusal to all pyrolysis oil and purified hydrocarbons from the new plant for the first four years. It will use these secondary raw materials in its patented ChemCycling production project to develop the market for chemically recycled plastics.
-Full PE stand-up pouches made with recycled and virgin performance PE polymers
Stand-up pouches (SUPs) can now be made using recycled material from full polyethylene (PE) laminated SUPs and virgin performance PE polymers thanks to a collaboration between ExxonMobil, Hosokawa Alpine AG, EREMA Engineering Recycling Maschinen und Anlagen GmbH, and Henkel AG & Co KGaA Company.
The new SUP packages combine 30 percent recycled SUP PE with 70 percent virgin ExxonMobil performance PE polymers and are suited for non-food applications, such as detergents.Petrochemical Nylon Resin Recycling
“Flexible packaging is structurally a highly complex product requiring different material layers to enable it to meet a wide range of property requirements.
-Sustainable packaging to be ‘battleground’ for premium alcohol brands
Sustainable packaging is likely to become a ‘battleground’ for premium alcohol brands, according to GlobalData analysts.
The finding has been attributed to the increasing demands from consumers for more sustainable packaging and its association with quality.
According to GlobalData’s 2019 Q3 consumer survey, 71% of global consumers consider it ‘quite’ or ‘extremely’ important for product packaging to be made from sustainable or renewable sources. Of the consumers surveyed, 25% believed it important for packaging to have a luxury appearance.

A range of hydraulic oils has been launched at K 2019 by ExxonMobil that are formulated to deliver good anti-wear performance and up to double oil life. This, the company says, gives plastics processors a way to cut costs, increase productivity and improve their environmental footprint by reducing waste.
Mobil DTE 20 Ultra Series fluids offer good thermal and oxidation stability, corrosion protection and controlled demulsibility. Plus, their keep-clean performance protects critical components, such as tight tolerance servo and proportional valves found in many modern hydraulic systems.
