-Recycling a bright spot for compounding extruder suppliers

Compounding extruder suppliers report U.S. business was flat or down in 2019, reflecting a weaker automotive business and some general delays in capital investments — but recycling lines and turnkey systems are holding up.

Meanwhile, big extrusion lines for manufacturing polyolefins have been a bright spot.

Even though several compounding equipment makers say the market is more difficult, they don’t see a return to the big cyclical swings that the sector experienced before the Great Recession of 2008-09.

-Indorama Ventures acquires Green Fiber International

Green Fiber International has the capacity to produce 40,000 metric tons of rPET annually.

Indorama Ventures Public Co. Ltd., a global chemical manufacturer based in Bangkok, has acquired Green Fiber International Inc. (GFI), a recycling company in Fontana, California. The facility can produce 40,000 metric tons per year of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) flakes, Indorama Ventures states in a news release on the acquisition.

-Stadler develops delabeler to address plastic sorting issue

Delabelers can significantly increase the output and purity rates of recycled plastic bottles, Stadler says.

Stadler, Altshausen, Germany, invests 5 percent of its revenue every year in research and development to search for ways to maximize the efficiency of the recycling process and the quality of the output. When the company saw an opportunity to improve the process for plastic bottles, it developed a specific solution to remove the labels, according to a company news release.Petrochemical PET PEF Graphene

Rok Mežič, head of research and development Slovenia, who led the development process of the machine, explains, “Bottles make up a large proportion of plastic waste, and they present a particular issue to the recycling industry: the labels are made of a different polymer and color than the bottles, which negatively affects the accuracy of the sorting process.

-New Anellotech Technology Tackles Plastics Pollution by Recycling Plastic Waste Into Chemicals

Sustainable technology company Anellotech is significantly expanding its program with Plas-TCatTM, a new process technology aiming to convert a wide range of plastic waste directly into chemicals – which can then be used to make new, virgin plastics.

95% of plastic packaging material is annually lost to the economy after a single use and often ends up in combustors, landfills or polluting the ocean. Petrochemical PET PEF Graphene

By leveraging Anellotech’s existing Bio-TCatTM process – which converts biomass into bio-based chemicals and biofuels – Plas-TCat has demonstrated encouraging results in lab studies using pure plastics.

-Europe December PE business gets under way, imports still a hot topic

Polyethylene (PE) discussions have begun in Europe for December business. Some early settlements have been made amid a wide range of reported imported prices.

A clear demarcation between spot and contracted volumes has developed. Buyers continue to purchase from suppliers to trigger year-end volume rebates – often shunning low spot prices in the quest for the rebate, which is often applicable to the total volume bought annually.Petrochemical PET PEF Graphene

A two-tier situation can even be seen in the spot market. New traders are offering material from producers – with new capacity in the USA and no assets in Europe – with these tending to be at the low end. In contrast, local European and US sellers with assets in Europe, tend to be making offers at the high end. The difference between the two can be almost as much as €100/tonne.
