-OPEC+ clamping down on members exceeding production quotas

OPEC+ is poised for a debate about lax implementation of oil-production cuts in Vienna this week, with Russia asking to discuss a rule change that would exclude some of its oil production from the group’s quota. Petrochemical PET PEF Polypropylene

Ministers from some of the world’s largest oil producers are gathering this week, and typically their discussions wouldn’t focus on a niche hydrocarbon called condensate. Yet as Saudi Arabia signals impatience with fellow members who aren’t implementing their pledged curbs, Russia’s rebuttal may focus on the accounting method for this light oil that’s a byproduct of natural gas fields.

-TOMRA aims to lead a plastic resource revolution

Plastic seems to have become public enemy number one. Barely a day goes by without this material receiving bad press for cluttering our streets or damaging marine life. But while plastic is not bad per se, the way that society is treating it throughout its life cycle is.

With demand for plastic continuing to grow, governments and private organisations are not doing enough to collect and recycle the material to create a closed loop; a resource revolution is needed. Petrochemical PET PEF Polypropylene

TOMRA, a resource optimisation firm based in Norway, believes that it offers a way to satisfy demand without compromising the planet’s collective environmental conscience.

-Viridor agrees “transformative” five-year supply of recycled PET

The agreement strengthens a long-standing partnership and common commitments towards a sustainable and circular economy for food packaging. Securing a stable supply of post-consumer material is fundamental to drive change at scale for an improved recycling system in the UK. Petrochemical PET PEF Polypropylene

The five-year agreement will be fulfilled by Viridor’s new £65m Avonmouth Resource Recovery Centre which will make kp their largest rPET flake customer and subsequently their largest buyer of rPET flake in the UK.

-The two top trends impacting the PET industry in the Middle East

The demand for healthier products and sustainability are the two biggest trends impacting the PET packaging industry in the Middle East, according to Sidel.

Harbinder Kathuria, vice president sales beverages, Middle East, Africa & India (MEA&I) at Sidel told FoodNavigator-Asia: “Consumers are becoming more health conscious, moving towards more nutritional products, and away from sugar etc.”

“Sustainability is also a big concern for consumers. Petrochemical PET PEF Polypropylene

To address this, producers are more and more preferring lightweight containers as they want to use less plastic, also because – from a manufacturing perspective – more plastic means more energy consumption. Packaging sizes are also becoming smaller.”

-Greenpeace plastic report urges innovation in packaging-free and reusable packaging alternatives

Little tangible progress has been made in the past year by the UK’s largest supermarkets towards reducing their use of throwaway plastics, says a report which calls for a focus on innovative solutions.Petrochemical PET PEF Polypropylene

Supermarkets in the UK are using more plastic despite public pledges to cut down, according to a survey published by Greenpeace and the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA).

The report revealed that seven out of the top 10 UK supermarkets have increased their plastic footprint in the last year. Only Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s had achieved marginal reductions.

Supermarket plastic has risen to more than 900,000 tonnes, it added, despite retailers making public commitments to cut down their plastic packaging.

-INDUSTRY PREDICTS BIOPLASTICS MARKET GROWTH

The global bioplastics industry is on course to increase its production capacity by 300,000 tonnes over the next five years, according to the annual European Bioplastics’ market data update, but this will pale in comparison to global primary plastic production.

Presented today (4 December) at the 14th European Bioplastics Conference in Berlin, the data revealed that the global bioplastics production capacity is set to increase from around 2.1 million tonnes in 2019 to 2.4 million tonnes in 2024, with bio-based versions of polymers such as polypropylene (PP) and natural polymers such as polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) driving the predicted growth.
