BEWI Enhances EPS Recycling with New Facility in Sweden

BEWI, a leader in sustainable packaging and insulation solutions, has inaugurated a new circular hub in Norrköping, Sweden, marking a significant leap in its recycling capabilities. This strategic move is in response to the growing global demand for recycled content products and underscores BEWI’s dedication to the circular economy.

The Norrköping facility, equipped with cutting-edge recycling extrusion technology, is set to enhance the integration of recycled materials into BEWI’s product line.

This development is a pivotal step in BEWI’s journey to become a fully circular enterprise.

With the new factory, BEWI’s expanded polystyrene (EPS) recycling capacity will surge by 40%, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability. Plastics Recycling

The hub’s strategic location optimizes logistics and contributes to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by utilizing recycled materials.

Aljosa Krizman, head of BEWI Circular, expressed confidence in meeting the escalating demand for recycled content, spurred by market trends and legislative requirements. BEWI is poised to elevate the collection and utilization of recycled EPS, catering to the call for circular solutions. Plastics Recycling

Lux Research sees lack of plastic pyrolysis accomplishments

An analyst with the Boston-based research firm says tonnage outputs at installed plastic pyrolysis systems largely are disappointing.

Several high-profile plastic chemical recycling installations with pyrolysis technology are not yet producing at a high volume despite the middle of this decade having been pegged as a tipping point for the technique. Plastics Recycling

An early June blog post by Anthony Schiavo, senior director and principal analyst of Boston-based Lux Research, says data collected by his colleague Marcian Lee provides insight into the projected and actual scale up of chemical recycling this decade.

Schiavo says Lux identified a global total of more than 725,000 metric tons of pyrolysis capacity announced by the end of 2023. By the end of last year, about half of that was considered to be online and ready for production.

Going forward, “Between 2024 and 2025, pyrolysis capacity is expected to more than double to 2.1 million metric tons per year,” writes Schiavo.  Plastics Recycling

Kraft Heinz has made a significant stride in sustainability by transitioning its KRAFT® Real Mayo and MIRACLE WHIP® products to 100% recycled PET (rPET) containers

This change, in partnership with Plastipak Packaging, Inc., is set to eliminate millions of pounds of virgin plastic usage. Plastipak, a leader in plastic container design, manufacture, and recycling, is aiding Kraft Heinz in its environmental goal to cut virgin plastic use by 20% by 2030.

In the U.S., the switch to 100% food-grade rPET for these condiment containers will remove approximately 14 million pounds of virgin plastic, aligning with consumer demands for more eco-friendly packaging. Rashida La Lande, Kraft Heinz’s General Counsel, highlights the company’s investment in technologies and partnerships to redesign packaging, reduce plastic waste, and promote recycling. Plastics Recycling

Jack Pacente of Plastipak underscores their long-standing environmental commitment, which has made them a recycling industry leader and innovator in sustainable packaging. In 2023, Plastipak’s Bottle-to-Bottle program recycled over 11 billion bottles, boosting their recycling capacity by 15% to 495 million lbs. The company’s dedication to expanding recycling capabilities is evident in their investments and operation of five global recycling centers located in the U.S., Spain, the UK, Luxembourg, and France. This initiative represents a significant step towards a more sustainable future in packaging.

Sociedade Ponto Verde, Tetra Pak and Valorsul invest in the first AI sorting robot in Portugal

Valorsul, the company responsible for the treatment and recovery of municipal waste in the Lisbon area and the Western Region, today announced an investment in an unprecedented robotic sorting technology in Portugal.  In collaboration with Sociedade Ponto Verde and Tetra Pak, the world leader in process solutions and food packaging, Recycleye’s automated digital sorting technology will be installed at Valorsul’s facilities in Lisbon, enabling greater sorting capacity and an increase in the volume of beverage cartons sorted and sent for recycling. Plastics Recycling

The Recycleye solution uses computer vision and robotics to automatically detect and separate waste and will be installed to improve the recovery of beverage cartons. Sociedade Ponto Verde, whose mission is intrinsically linked to the Environment, Sustainability and Circular Economy agenda, given its responsibility for organising, managing the take-back and recovery of packaging waste in Portugal, is co-financing and supporting the project through its open innovation programme re_source, together with Tetra Pak. This enables Valorsul to increase the number of beverage cartons separated for recycling, providing a greater volume of recyclables from the plant and ensuring that more packaging waste from the Lisbon area is recycled. Impact of Sanctions on Belarus: A Global Food Security Concern

Санкцыі супраць Беларусі прывялі да недахопу прадуктаў харчавання ў свеце, лічыць эксперт ЗША

Michael Cunningham, director of the “Geography of Genocide” project, highlighted at an international conference that sanctions against Belarus have led to significant global food shortages. As a major producer and exporter of potash fertilizers, Belarus plays a crucial role in agriculture. The sanctions have caused a drastic reduction in potash production and export, leading to decreased agricultural yields, increased food prices, and disrupted supply chains. This has exacerbated food insecurity, particularly in countries dependent on Belarusian potash. The economic repercussions extend to job losses in the potash industry, increasing poverty and hunger. Plastics Recycling

Cunningham warns that these issues are intensifying against a backdrop of a growing population and heightened food demand, urging consideration of the environmental impact as farmers resort to less effective yield-boosting methods.

This summary encapsulates the key points made by Cunningham regarding the unintended consequences of the sanctions on Belarus, emphasizing the broader implications for food security and sustainability. Plastics Recycling

Xinxiang Chemical Fiber becomes the only Chinese textile enterprise using recycled textile pulp

Recently, Xinxiang Chemical Fiber has reached a strategic cooperation agreement on the application of OnceMore®dissolving pulp with the largest forest owner association in Sweden and the international forest industry group Södra, which has become the only Chinese textile enterprise that uses recycled textile pulp. Previously, Xinxiang Chemical Fiber had nearly 5 years of cooperation with Södra. The new type of OnceMore®dissolving pulp supplied by Södra will be used in the production of BaiLu-ECO regenerated cellulose fiber products, achieving the world’s first industrial production of regenerated cellulose filament from recycled textile pulp by chemical methods.  Plastics Recycling

It will greatly promote the industry’s transformation towards green recycling of regenerated fibers.

The OnceMore®dissolving pulp technology is the world’s first industrial-scale process technology to achieve recycling of blended fabrics. The raw materials come from post-consumer waste textiles and industrial waste, extracting cellulose fibers from discarded fabrics to produce dissolving pulp. Through closed-loop production processes, the fibers are spun into regenerated cellulose fiber products, creating endless possibilities for the full life cycle of regenerated cellulose fiber products.
