-Domo Chemicals Expands Polyamide Capacity in China
The Belgian company acquired Solvay’s Performance Polyamides business in 2020 and has sold Technyl products globally since February 2022.
Domo Chemicals has announced a long-term investment plan in China to continue expanding its production capacity of Technyl high-performance polyamides. This plan aims to meet growing demand in the automotive, electrical and electronics, and industrial consumer goods industries, and help build a sustainable future, said the company. Domo Chemicals acquired Solvay’s Performance Polyamides business in 2020 and has sold Technyl products globally since Feb. 1, 2022, including in China, one of the company’s key strategic markets.
Global demand for polyamide materials is currently increasing at a compound annual growth rate of up to 3%. The adoption of new energy vehicles — including pure electric, hybrid, and fuel cell models — is expected to reach 45% globally by 2030, and automakers are increasingly using sustainable materials to make components, which are key growth drivers of the polyamide market.
In addition, demand for miniaturized circuit breakers, contactors, plug switches, and other components in the electrical and electronics and industrial consumer goods industries further opens up the application potential for polyamide materials.
Asia is the fastest growing market for polyamides in the world, with the majority of that growth concentrated in China. Polyamide-Capacity – Polymer-from-biomass
As an integrated producer of PA 6/66, Domo Chemicals is committed to improving and expanding its production facilities in China in order to increase capacity and establish a strong presence. This will help local manufacturers keep pace with emerging trends and create innovative, high-performance, and sustainable products and applications.
To this end, Domo Chemicals will continue to expand capacity at its production site in Jiaxing, Zhejiang Province, in three stages.
Since March 2022, an additional 6,000 tonnes/year of capacity has been made available, with the plant achieving total capacity of 14,000 tonnes/year of PA 6 from April onwards.
A new 35,000-tonnes/year plant in Haiyan is slated for completion in the third quarter of 2023, in which Domo Chemicals has invested more than €14 million ($14.8 million).
Going forward, Domo Chemicals will further expand the plant, gradually increasing capacity to 50,000 tonnes/year.
-SK Chemicals ready for mass production of PO3G polymer derived from biological raw materials
SK Chemicals, a unit of South Korea’s SK Group, is ready for the mass production of PO3G (Polyoxytrimethylene Glycol), a polymer derived from biological raw materials, using fermented corn. The new material brand-named “Ecotrion” reduces greenhouse gas emissions and offers long durability.
SK Chemicals has completed the establishment of a PO3G production line in the southeastern industrial port city of Ulsan. PO3G products would be mainly used for materials that require elasticity, such as polyurethane and spandex. This family of high-performance polyols is an ideal replacement for petroleum-based ingredients as it offers numerous advantages in various fields of applications.
SK Chemicals would gradually increase the production of PO3G in line with the market demand and accelerate efforts to tap into markets such as artificial leather, sneakers, fashion, and furniture with Ecotrion’s excellent physical properties and eco-friendliness. Sneakers and fashion products using PO3G have the advantage of smoother, elastic resilience and wear resistance over existing products, making them more wearable. “The white bio-industry is growing rapidly with domestic and foreign carbon reduction policies,” SK Chemicals’ new business development division head Chung Jae-joon said in a statement on May 2. “We will further strengthen the green business system based on our environmental, social and governance (ESG) management as a bio-material project that we have been preparing.”
Plastic products are broken down into microscopic sizes but they still remain in the environment. The accumulation of plastic waste has become a serious global problem. White biotechnology is an area of science that is devoted to using living cells collected from yeast, molds, microorganisms and plants, and enzymes to create products that can be easily degraded.
