-Low demand and supply cuts stabilise prices

PET prices softened in August as a result of improved local material availability

In August, standard thermoplastic prices remained largely unchanged from the previous month. There was the usual summer lull in demand, while supply was also impacted by the unusually hot summer weather.

Polyethylene producers had to settle for a price rollover in August in line with ethylene costs amid thin trading. LDPE was well supplied but LLDPE and HDPE were tighter due mainly to a limited volume of imported material. PVC prices were also rolled over in line with the ethylene reference.

-NPE2018: News in Materials & Additives

NPE2018 yielded lots of news in materials and additives. While most of it was reported in our April, May, and June issues, there’s still more to report. New developments in engineering resins and customized TPEs reflect trends toward electric and autonomous vehicles. Other new materials include bioplastics, polyolefin film materials for packaging, and novel PVC formulations. There are also new additives ranging from unique functional additives for barrier to a novel conductive additive.

-Teijin develops water-repellant stretchable fabric

Teijin Frontier, the Teijin Group’s fibre and products converting company, has developed a new, highly water-repellent fabric incorporating enhanced elastic properties.

It plans to market the new product from the beginning of the 2019 spring/summer season. Teijin, headquartered in Japan, is a technology-driven global group offering advanced solutions.
The new fabric is designed primarily for trousers and outer-clothing applications requiring medium thickness materials. Teijin Frontier is targeting annual sales of JPY one billion ($ 9 million) by the fiscal year ending March 2021, according to a press release.

-Oil steady as trade war worries balance Iran sanctions

LONDON – Oil prices steadied on Friday as concerns over the impact of a trade war depressed sentiment, although impending U.S. sanctions on Iran and falling Venezuelan output supported the market.

Benchmark Brent crude oil LCOc1 was unchanged at $77.77 a barrel by 1205 GMT. U.S. light crude CLc1 was 10 cents lower at $70.15.

-NEW BRANDING FOR INNOVIA FILMS

On completion of the acquisition of Treofan Americas, CCL Industries announced that the company would immediately transition to trade under the name of Innovia Films.  At this time the decision was also taken to rebrand Innovia Films as a whole.  The purpose is to unify the new larger company which has a broader global footprint and to align the branding closer to the CCL corporate styling.

-Pretium releases saucy new PET bottle

US-based containers and closures maker Pretium Packaging is launching a 12oz PET sauce bottle that has been designed to mimic the look and feel of glass.

Providing a viable alternative for sauce brands previously unwilling to convert to PET, the bottle minimises the use of virgin materials, as it can be made with up to 50 per cent recycled PET. -Aptar completes CSP Technologies acquisition

US-based packaging, dispensing and sealing solutions firm Aptar Group has completed the formerly announced acquisition of CSP Technologies.

As previously reported, the transaction is understood to be in the region of $555 million.
