SACMI Packaging Summit Highlights the Future of Rigid Packaging

More than 300 packaging professionals from 66 countries gathered at SACMI’s headquarters in Imola, Italy, for an international discussion about the technologies reshaping rigid packaging.

The two-day Packaging Innovation Summit brought together manufacturers, customers, technology partners, specialists and start-ups. Rather than focusing on a single machine or material, the event examined how productivity, digitalisation, quality control and sustainability are becoming interconnected parts of the same industrial strategy.

Why the SACMI Packaging Summit matters

Packaging manufacturers are being asked to increase output while controlling energy use, material consumption, waste and production costs. They must also respond to demand for recycled content, new packaging formats and more transparent quality assurance.

The Summit positioned these challenges as elements of one production system. High-speed machinery, automated inspection, process data and material research were presented not as separate investments, but as tools that must operate together.

This approach reflects a broader transition in packaging manufacturing. Competitiveness increasingly depends not only on nominal machine speed, but also on uptime, consistency, resource efficiency and the ability to correct process deviations before they produce significant waste.  SACMI Packaging Summit

CCM80SB targets ultra-high-speed cap production

One of the event’s principal technology previews was the CCM80SB, SACMI’s new compression moulding machine for flat-top HDPE caps.

The system was demonstrated with a one-gram closure and a stated output of up to 240,000 caps per hour. That is equivalent to 4,000 caps per minute. SACMI reports a minimum cycle time of 1.2 seconds.

The CCM80SB was shown in line with an SFM20SA system used to cut and fold the tamper-evident band. The demonstration therefore covered more than the initial moulding stage, illustrating how high-speed cap production can be integrated with downstream processing.

According to specialist reporting on the machine, the new platform also targets a reduction in specific energy consumption compared with existing equipment. This is significant because the commercial value of higher output can be weakened when it is accompanied by disproportionate energy demand or maintenance requirements.

Productivity is moving beyond maximum speed

The Summit also featured other systems in SACMI’s closures portfolio, including the CCM48SF and the SFM15MA slitting and folding machine.

The CCM48SF can operate with a 1.2-second cycle and produce up to 2,400 caps per minute, according to the information presented at the event. In its 15+15 spindle configuration, the SFM15MA can reach a stated capacity of up to 3,000 caps per minute.

These systems illustrate an important change in the way packaging productivity is assessed. Maximum output remains essential, but manufacturers also need to consider format-change efficiency, process stability, quality inspection, operator workload and unplanned stoppages.

A production line that reaches a high theoretical speed but frequently stops, generates excessive rejects or requires complex interventions may deliver a lower practical return than a more connected and controllable system.

Digital process control takes a central role

Digitalisation was one of the Summit’s most prominent themes. SACMI presented its SMARTPACK and SMARTCARE services alongside a Control Room model intended to centralise production and machine information.

The proposed environment supports functions such as diagnostics, KPI monitoring, recipe optimisation, process analysis and predictive or proactive maintenance. Automated alerts and digital troubleshooting can help production teams identify abnormal conditions and respond before they lead to extended downtime.

The objective is to turn machine data into operational decisions. Instead of relying only on retrospective reports, manufacturers can use current and historical information to detect recurring losses, compare production runs and prioritise maintenance activities.

This can support improvements in overall equipment effectiveness, or OEE, while reducing waste, response times and unnecessary consumption. These outcomes nevertheless depend on implementation quality, data accuracy and the organisation’s ability to act on the information collected.

Automated inspection for PET and rPET preforms

SACMI also presented developments for PET and recycled PET preform production. The technology showcase included the IPS500 platform combined with automated inspection systems.

One of the solutions discussed was PVS Robot, which brings together robotics, machine vision and artificial intelligence to automate preform inspection. The company also presented PVS Embedded, designed to operate directly with the IPS system and inspect the full production flow without changing the machine’s normal cycle time or requiring a separate inspection layout.

Automated inspection is becoming increasingly relevant as converters process more demanding materials and lighter packaging designs. When production speeds rise, manual sampling alone cannot provide continuous visibility across every item.

In-line vision systems can identify defects, support traceability and reveal process variations. Their value is not limited to rejecting defective products: inspection data can also help manufacturers understand why defects occur and adjust upstream production conditions.

Recycled HDPE and circular cap production

Material development formed another major part of the programme. SACMI presented PureCap, a project intended to support a circular “cap-to-cap” supply chain for recycled HDPE.

The concept combines material supply with technical and application support from SACMI’s Rigid Packaging Laboratory. This is important because increasing recycled content is not simply a purchasing decision. Variations in material composition and processing behaviour can affect moulding conditions, closure performance, colour and dimensional consistency.

A circular cap system therefore requires coordination among recyclers, material suppliers, machinery manufacturers, laboratories, converters and brand owners.

By linking material expertise with production technology and quality control, the PureCap initiative aims to address this requirement across more than one stage of the value chain.

Cellulose and mono-material packaging alternatives

The Summit also examined dry moulding for cellulose-fibre products, with potential applications that include capsules, closures, necks and containers.

Fibre-based formats are attracting attention as the packaging industry investigates alternatives to conventional plastics. However, their suitability must be evaluated according to the product, barrier requirements, manufacturing scale, collection infrastructure and expected end-of-life route.

SACMI also discussed the possibility of PET beverage caps. Using a PET closure with a PET container could support mono-material packaging concepts, provided that the completed package performs correctly and remains compatible with relevant collection and recycling systems.

The significance of these developments lies in the widening range of material options available to packaging producers. The sector is unlikely to adopt one universal solution. Different applications will require different combinations of plastics, recycled polymers, fibres and production processes.

Applied research extends beyond conventional moulding

Several research-stage technologies were included in the programme.

The FSP24M focuses on synchronised cutting of tamper-evident bands. The cutting operation can be aligned with the geometry of the cap, supporting applications in which the position of the cut must be accurately controlled.

SACMI also demonstrated Linear Blow Forming, or LBF. This process combines compression moulding of a preform with a subsequent blow-moulding stage for container production.

Demonstrations involving 90 cc and 500 cc formats were used to assess characteristics including neck quality, base formation, dimensional stability and weight distribution. The project indicates that compression-based processes may have applications beyond the company’s established cap and preform platforms.

Packaging lines become connected factory systems

The event extended into post-processing, multi-component assembly and intralogistics.

Technologies from VELOMAT addressed high-speed assembly for closures, spouts, liners, discs, sports caps, dispensing products, spray pumps and components used in medical or pharmaceutical packaging.

SACMI Intralogistics presented systems for linking production, inspection, storage and dispatch. This factory-wide perspective is increasingly important because improving one machine does not automatically optimise the complete workflow.

Production gains can be lost when components wait for transport, inspection data remain isolated or finished goods cannot move efficiently into storage. Connecting these operations allows manufacturers to assess performance across the complete process rather than at individual equipment level.

A packaging strategy built around integration

The central message emerging from the SACMI Packaging Summit is that the next stage of rigid-packaging development will depend on integration.

Faster moulding remains important, as demonstrated by the CCM80SB’s stated capacity of 240,000 caps per hour. Yet speed is only one element of the investment case.

Manufacturers also need reliable process data, automated inspection, efficient downstream equipment and materials that can meet both technical and environmental requirements.

For packaging producers, the most relevant question is therefore no longer simply how quickly a machine can operate. It is how effectively the entire production system can convert materials, data and energy into consistent packaging with minimal interruption and waste.
