What Elon Musk revealed to the annual Investor Day – by calling him Master Plan Part 3 – has disappointed a part of the investors as it did not enter in detail by anticipating new models (including the long -awaited compact, smaller and cheaper than Model 3 ). Tesla says that the new platform will begin to be used in a new plant in Mexico. And it will work – as should be expected when efficiencies derive from a holistic approach – with the sum of minor earnings throughout the line. “If we intend to climb as we want we must rethink the production again – said the vice -president of Tesla’s engineering, Lars Moravy – We started with the Model Y when we made these huge single or printed single pieces and we eliminated hundreds of parts”. Moravy recalled that Tesla simplified the assembly of the Model Y with the structural battery where the battery is precisely the floor of the car. This production method brings a greater work density (+44%) with operators who are less time to do nothing. And more cars produced. It is no coincidence that it has been anticipated that “new generation cars, like the one that the new platform will use, will be designed by thinking about automation”. The new production scheme presented by Tesla would seem to be doubly winning: faster and also cheaper. It should help reduce costs up to 50%, making the future $ 24,000 electrical model significantly more feasible.
