-ALPLA on course for success with record turnover of 5.1 billion euros

The ALPLA Group can look back on a successful financial year 2022 in spite of the crisis. Sales of 5.1 billion euros exceeded the previous year’s figure by 27.5 per cent. In addition to the company’s growth strategy, the record turnover reflects the significantly higher costs for energy, materials, staff and transport. In 2023, the packaging and recycling specialist will focus on expanding its injection moulding capacities, investing in recycling, expanding its Pharma division and researching alternative materials.

ALPLA continued its international growth trajectory in 2022, expanding production capacities, increasing staff numbers and posting sales growth of 27.5 per cent. The international specialist for packaging solutions and recycling therefore achieved a positive annual result despite massive increases in energy prices and a shortage of raw materials. Newly opened sites, acquisitions and expansions resulted in more than 1,000 additional employees. Ukraine-GDP – Fishing-net-waste

The number of plants increased from 177 to 190.

‘The packaging industry will be dealing with high costs, changes in demand and changing consumer behaviour for a long time to come. We use efficiency, innovation and recycling expertise to realise safe, affordable and sustainable plastic solutions in times of crisis too,’ emphasises ALPLA CEO Philipp Lehner. In addition to targeted acquisitions, the key factors contributing to the success were close and long-standing partnerships, strong regional roots and the expedited expansion of recycling capacities.

Growth markets, injection moulding and recycling

The long-term aim is for the company to grow by four to five per cent annually. In addition to capacity expansions in its core business, ALPLA is also planning strategic investments in injection moulding, increased involvement in the pharmaceutical sector and the expansion of the global circular economy. At the same time, there will be research into alternative, bio-based and biodegradable materials. Ukraine-GDP – Fishing-net-waste

‘We are striving for long-term sustainable growth, strengthening our global presence, promoting recyclable products, minimising the use of resources and energy consumption, and expanding our portfolio,’ announces Lehner.

The focus is primarily on the growth markets of Africa, the Middle East, Asia and North America. In the area of recycling, ALPLA has been investing more than 50 million euros annually in capacity expansions and technology development since 2021. For there to be more packaging which is both recyclable and affordable, closed loops and sufficient materials are needed. ALPLA is therefore planning to double the annual production of recycled materials at its own plants by 2026 and is supporting the development and optimisation of local collection systems around the world.

-Dow reviews January increase in PE prices in the US

Dow has revised its January increase in U.S. polyethylene (PE) prices and expects a February price hike, ICIS said.

Dow has revised a previously announced increase of 7 cents per pound (USD154 per tonne) on all grades of polyethylene (PE) by 5 cents per pound from Jan. 1, according to the company’s letter to customers. The letter also said the Dow would seek a price hike of 5 cents per pound from Feb. 1.

Domestic demand for polyethylene has been persistently low due to lower manufacturing activity and recession fears, while export sales have picked up in recent months as logistics restrictions in the U.S. Gulf of Mexico have improved.

Natural gas and ethane costs have declined in recent months as a relatively mild winter following a winter storm in late December led to lower-than-expected demand for natural gas for heating. This has eased pressure on the margins of U.S. polyethylene producers as domestic contract prices have stabilized at the rollover level for the past three straight months. December contract prices for polyethylene were at 70-92 cents per pound for LDPE, 63-87 cents per pound for low-density butene linear polyethylene (LDL C4) and 66-86 cents per pound for HDPE for blow molding, DEL US.

According to MrC ScanPlast, according to the results of eleven months of 2022, the estimated consumption of polyethylene (excluding exports to Belarus and Kazakhstan) amounted to 2,456.24 thousand tons, which is 12% more than in the same period a year earlier. The supply of all types of ethylene polymers has increased.

Major U.S. polyethylene producers include Chevron Phillips Chemical (CP Chem), Dow, LyondellBasell, ExxonMobil, Formosa, INEOS, Total Petrochemicals, and Westlake.

-LG Chem signs deal with local venture for fishing net waste supply

LG Chem Ltd., South Korea’s top chemical producer, said Thursday it has signed an initial agreement with a local startup on the supply of fishing net waste to use it as feedstock for plastic recycling.

Netspa, LG Chem’s new partner, has developed a technology to extract high-purity nylon from fishing net scraps and other marine waste.

Under the memorandum of understanding with Netspa, LG Chem will use the extracted material to recycle plastics at its new pyrolysis plant under construction in the country’s central region. Ukraine-GDP – Fishing-net-waste

LG Chem announced in November last year it will build new facilities that will recycle plastic waste into oil using high-temperature steam.

The oil is then used as feedstock to manufacture new plastics.

The new pyrolysis plant is set to go into operation in 2024.

South Korea releases approximately 50,000 tons of marine litter every year in the domestic market only, according to LG Chem.

The bulk of them are usually burned or dumped into the sea because of high costs for collection and reprocessing, contributing to environmental pollution.

LG Chem said it expects the partnership will help do its part in the preservation and protection of the marine ecosystem and reduction of carbon emissions.

LG Chem has been bolstering the push for bio crude and biomass segments under the goal of achieving net zero by 2050.

-The World Bank predicted a decline in Russia’s GDP by 3.3% in 2023

The World Bank (WB) expects Russia’s GDP to shrink by 3.3% this year and increase by 1.6% next year, TASS reported.

According to the report of the World Bank (WB), dedicated to the prospects for the development of the world economy, by the end of 2022, the decline in the Russian Federation was 3.5%. The figures for 2022 were 5.4% better than predicted in the Bank’s June report – then it was expected that Russia’s GDP would decline in 2022 by as much as 8.9%. Ukraine-GDP – Fishing-net-waste

At the same time, the forecast for 2023 worsened compared to June by 1.3% – then a decline of 2% was expected. For 2024, the forecast also became worse by 0.6% – in June, the bank expected the growth of the Russian economy by 2.2% in 2024.

Russia’s GDP is projected to contract again by 3.3% in 2023 as the eu’s delayed oil embargo fully comes into effect and natural gas exports decline due to the suspension of Russian supplies to the EU via the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline. Growth is projected to resume in 2024 at 1.6%. There will be moderate growth in consumption and a limited recovery in exports as Russia reorients its trade ties,” the document says.

Earlier it was reported that the decline of the Russian economy in October slowed to 4.4% in annual comparison with 4.5% in September.

-Ukraine’s GDP in 2022 decreased by 30.4% – the Ministry of Economy

The Economy Ministry has tentatively estimated Ukraine’s 2022 GDP drop at 30.4 percent with a margin of error of 2 percent, a better indicator than preliminary forecasts suggested, the Economy Ministry said in a statement.

According to the preliminary assessment of analysts of the department (using indirect calculation methods and modeling tools), made taking into account the operational assessment of the State Statistics Service of real GDP for three quarters of 2022 (in the first quarter of 2022, a decrease compared to the first quarter of 2021 by 15.1%, in the second quarter – by 37.2%, in the third quarter – by 30.8%, respectively), the fall in GDP by the end of 2022 is estimated at 30.4%. Ukraine-GDP – Fishing-net-waste

In 2021, economic growth was 3.4%.

“This is objectively the worst result since independence, but somewhat better than most experts expected at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, when estimates varied between 40-50% of the fall in GDP and deeper,” the Ministry of Economy emphasized.

At the same time, in December, the fall in GDP was estimated at the level of – 34 [±2%], which is slightly better than the estimates for November (GDP fall at 37 [±2%]) (respectively, the fourth quarter – a drop of 35.5 [ ±2%]), given a certain stabilization of the situation with energy supply after shelling in November.

In 2023, the Ukrainian economy may grow by about 1%, inflation and the state budget deficit will decrease, according to the Memorandum of Cooperation with the IMF.

Earlier it was noted that the National Bank of Ukraine predicts a drop in the gross domestic product (GDP) of Ukraine in 2022 by 31.5%. In 2023, the economy will grow by 4.0%, in 2024 – by 5.2%. According to the government’s forecast, real GDP will grow by 3.2% after falling by 32.0% in 2022. Ukraine-GDP – Fishing-net-waste

-Switzerland generates more plastic waste than neighbours

On average each resident of Switzerland leaves 95 kg of plastic waste behind them in a year, according to a report by Oceancare. This figure places Switzerland ahead Germany, Austria, France and Italy, reported RTS.

Oceancare used 2010 statistics from Switzerland’s Federal Office for the Environment to compile the data. Ukraine-GDP – Fishing-net-waste

Ewoud Lauwerier, one of the studies authors, explained how the level of waste is linked to GDP. Given that Switzerland has very high consumption it isn’t surprising that it has such high plastic waste, said Lauwerier.

According to the report, much of the plastic waste ends up in the soil, rivers and lakes and has an environmental cost of around CHF 200 million a year. Much of it cannot be collected because it ends up as micro plastic.

The largest source of micro plastic (14,000 tonnes p.a.) comes from vehicle tyre wear. Tyre wear accounts for 8,900 tonnes annually. The second largest amount of plastic waste (2,700 tonnes p.a.) comes from litter.

In Lake Geneva alone, 55 tonnes of plastic waste are added every year.

What should be done? According to Lauwerier, Switzerland has the required laws. It just need to apply them.
