BASF has introduced the innovative Ultramid® T6000 polyphthalamide (PPA), a new flame retardant (FR) grade designed for electric vehicle (EV) applications

This advanced material enhances safety by replacing non-FR materials in terminal block applications, ensuring greater protection for inverters and motor systems.

Ultramid T6000 combines the benefits of PA66 and PA6T, offering superior mechanical and dielectric properties, especially in humid and high-temperature environments. Its ease of processing and low tool corrosion make it ideal for complex automotive parts. With a wide array of pre-colored options, it offers both aesthetic flexibility and high performance.

“As safety becomes more critical in EV component design, BASF remains dedicated to providing innovative solutions. Battery recycling

Our goal is to meet current demands while enabling our customers to address future technical and safety requirements,” said Eng Guan Soh, BASF’s Vice President of Business Management for Engineering Plastics in Asia Pacific.

This FR-grade material excels in high-strength applications like terminal blocks, providing exceptional durability and electrical isolation for high-voltage systems. It withstands thermal shock from -40°C to 150°C over 1,000 cycles, making it ideal for EV platforms. Its non-halogenated flame retardant minimizes corrosion risks and meets strict safety standards, protecting occupants during fires.

The material’s strength, stiffness, and dimensional stability allow for complex designs, integrating multiple functions into single components. This simplifies assembly and maximizes space efficiency in electric vehicles. Battery recycling

Latin America in the Spotlight

Thermoformed packaging in Mexico, plastic alternatives in Chile, and aseptic carton filling in Colombia have all made headlines in recent months.

Having majored in Latin American Studies at the University of Kansas — and having later reported on Brazil’s sugarcane ethanol market — I always enjoy writing about packaging developments in the region. Battery recycling

Generally speaking, Latin America is expected to garner attention as Donald Trump begins his second term as POTUS. Trump said post-election that he intends to impose a 25% tariff on all products coming into the United States from Mexico, which could definitely have ramifications for the packaging industry if enacted.

It will be interesting to watch the back-and-forth on tariffs and trade policy between Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. I remember seeing huge billboards promoting Sheinbaum for president when I visited Mexico City in January 2024. I wish I had snapped a photo of those billboards as a future reminder of Sheinbaum’s landslide victory in June 2024.

Politics aside, we at Packaging Strategies enjoy reporting on exciting packaging developments in Latin America, and lately there has been no shortage of news.

  • Nefab announced in October that PolyFlex — part of Nefab Group — is opening its doors in León, Mexico, and expanding its manufacturing capabilities to accelerate in-house production of heavy-gauge thermoformed packaging. As the first facility in Mexico to offer both heavy-gauge thermoformed and injection-molded packaging, the expansion positions Nefab to provide a full range of sustainable packaging solutions tailored to the Lithium-Ion battery (LiB), E-mobility, and automotive sectors Battery recycling

Ace Green Recycling has finalized a lease for a site in Mundra, Gujarat, to establish India’s largest battery recycling facility

Building on its existing operations, which have been recycling lithium-ion batteries since 2023, including lithium iron phosphate (LFP) chemistries, the new facility will significantly expand Ace’s capacity.

By 2026, Ace plans to recycle 10,000 metric tons of LFP batteries annually to meet the rising demand. The facility will employ Ace’s modular LithiumFirst technology, which operates at room temperature using a fully electrified hydrometallurgical process, producing no Scope 1 carbon emissions and generating zero liquid or solid waste.

This technology consistently achieves around 75% lithium recovery from LFP batteries, producing high-purity lithium carbonate that is reintegrated into the battery materials value chain. Battery recycling

Strategically located near key ports handling over 10% of India’s maritime cargo, the Mundra facility will streamline the transportation of feedstock and recycled products. Additionally, Ace will use its GreenLead technology to recycle lead batteries, providing an eco-friendly alternative to traditional smelting processes, also with zero Scope 1 carbon emissions.

The facility is expected to create up to 50 local jobs, contributing to the growth of the economy in the region. Once fully operational, Ace’s total employment in India will surpass 100, further solidifying its commitment to sustainable recycling and the circular economy.
