This reduction occurred significantly earlier than the market’s previously expected low point in mid-February.
The sharp drop in operating rates has translated into stronger processing margins. Domestic margins have risen to around 567.8 yuan per tonne, while international margins have improved to approximately $110 per tonne, calculated using prices from January 22. The current decline in output is largely driven by substantial capacity losses at several major plants. Meanwhile, Wankai Zhejiang’s No. 2 unit is operating at only 50% capacity due to equipment replacement issues, and the Chongqing unit continues to run with a 20% production cut.

Replenishment activity supports short-term transactions
Despite these concerns, replenishment activity in the PET bottle chip market has been relatively active during the recent price rally. The sharp contraction in spot availability following concentrated maintenance shutdowns has forced many traders to cover short positions, especially those with high short exposure.
In some cases, repeated circulation of cargo among traders has amplified replenishment demand, occasionally reaching multiples of actual end-user consumption. At the same time, small and medium-sized downstream buyers have continued to purchase during price increases, even as major end-users largely completed procurement earlier at lower levels.

However, lower inventories come with their own risks. If polyester raw material prices continue to rise, the cost base of inventory accumulated around the Spring Festival will increase accordingly.
