-California mandate seeks to develop market for recycled plastic
California has become the first US state to mandate a minimum recycled content in plastic beverage containers. The main objective of the new law is to develop the local market for recycled resins and to create value in the entire recycling chain.
Starting in 2022, manufacturers are required to include an annual average of 15% of post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) in beverage containers. By 2025 the mandate is set to increase to 25% and by 2030 to 50%.
Beverage manufacturers that violate those requirements will have to pay an annual administrative penalty of 20 cents/lb of PCR they fail to reach. The amount will be deposited in the Recycling Enhancement Penalty Account and used to support recycling infrastructure, collection, and processing of plastic beverage containers in the state.

At the end of 2019 REPSOL obtained the ISCC PLUS certification for all its production centres of polyolefin and other circular petrochemical products, including recycled styrene. This certification enables REPSOL to guarantee the traceability of the waste used in order to offer products to its customers made from recycled material for applications with strict cleanliness and safety standards.

Polyester demand showed significant improvement after China’s week-long holiday amid restocking activities from downstream converters.
However, the textile industry is a labor-intensive industry, and once the textile factories in India resume production, China will face falling export orders as India’s textile industry has an advantage due to the lower labour cost.
“I think the stronger polyester demand may only last till end of this month as year-end period is usually the lull season for textile industry,” a polyester producer said.

Turkey-based multiple materials recycling firm Burkasan, which has several recycling facilities in that nation, is using Tomra Sorting Recycling AutoSort and AutoSort Flake machines at a new plastic recycling facility. The plant has been designed to sort up to five tons per hour of plastic scrap, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-desnity polyethylene (HDPE), and polypropylene (PP) containers, according to Tomra.
Tomra calls it the first time a recycling plant in Turkey has been outfitted to process mixed plastic containers “using the most advanced sensor-based sorting solutions from Tomra Sorting Recycling to get excellent results in the production of PET flakes and HDPE granules.”
States Vedat Kılıç, board chairman at Burkasan, “We set ourselves the target to produce the best raw materials out of [scrap] plastic by using Tomra’s optical sorting machines.

As part of a strategic collaboration, Covestro received a first delivery of 1,000 tonnes of renewable phenol from Borealis, produced with renewable hydrocarbons from Neste.

Neste produces these ISCC Plus certified hydrocarbons from renewable raw materials. The hydrocarbons are then converted into ISCC Plus certified phenol by Borealis and used by Covestro to produce high-performance plastic polycarbonate in automotive and electronic applications.

The construction of UPM’s innovative biochemicals facility starts in Germany
UPM celebrated today the official start of the construction of the state-of-the-art biochemicals facility in Leuna, Germany. The biorefinery investment of EUR 550 million is a major milestone in UPM’s strategic transformation.
In Leuna, UPM will produce a range of 100% wood-based biochemicals that enable a switch from fossil-based products to sustainable alternatives in a number of end-uses such as plastics, textiles, cosmetics and industrial applications. Technology and process have been developed by UPM over the past ten years, mainly building on the company’s own innovation capabilities and selectively working with international partners. The biorefinery is expected to start up by the end of 2022.The investment has been awarded The Bio Act of the Year 2020 by the World BioEconomy Forum earlier in September this year.
