-California mandate seeks to develop market for recycled plastic

California has become the first US state to mandate a minimum recycled content in plastic beverage containers. The main objective of the new law is to develop the local market for recycled resins and to create value in the entire recycling chain.

Starting in 2022, manufacturers are required to include an annual average of 15% of post-consumer recycled plastic (PCR) in beverage containers. By 2025 the mandate is set to increase to 25% and by 2030 to 50%.

Beverage manufacturers that violate those requirements will have to pay an annual administrative penalty of 20 cents/lb of PCR they fail to reach. The amount will be deposited in the Recycling Enhancement Penalty Account and used to support recycling infrastructure, collection, and processing of plastic beverage containers in the state.

-ELIX Polymers and REPSOL sign Circular Economy partnership agreement

The agreement reached between ELIX Polymers and REPSOL will make it possible to implement a collaborative framework for a circular economy that includes the commitment to supply ISCC PLUS-certified recycled styrene on a regular basis as from 2021.

This alliance will enable both companies to strengthen their customer-supplier relations and co-operate on achieving their goals within their respective circular economy and sustainability strategies. Petrochemical PETBottle Film Automotive

At the end of 2019 REPSOL obtained the ISCC PLUS certification for all its production centres of polyolefin and other circular petrochemical products, including recycled styrene. This certification enables REPSOL to guarantee the traceability of the waste used in order to offer products to its customers made from recycled material for applications with strict cleanliness and safety standards.

-China’s polyester demand to stay strong on feedstock cost, rising export orders

China’s polyester demand is expected to remain healthy till the end of October amid rising feedstock cost and improving export demand. Petrochemical PETBottle Film Automotive

Polyester demand showed significant improvement after China’s week-long holiday amid restocking activities from downstream converters.

However, the textile industry is a labor-intensive industry, and once the textile factories in India resume production, China will face falling export orders as India’s textile industry has an advantage due to the lower labour cost.

“I think the stronger polyester demand may only last till end of this month as year-end period is usually the lull season for textile industry,” a polyester producer said.

-Tomra AutoSort devices find home in Turkey

Turkish recycling firm Burkasan sorts plastic containers and flakes using Tomra sensor sorting equipment. Petrochemical PETBottle Film Automotive

Turkey-based multiple materials recycling firm Burkasan, which has several recycling facilities in that nation, is using Tomra Sorting Recycling AutoSort and AutoSort Flake machines at a new plastic recycling facility. The plant has been designed to sort up to five tons per hour of plastic scrap, including polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high-desnity polyethylene (HDPE), and polypropylene (PP) containers, according to Tomra.

Tomra calls it the first time a recycling plant in Turkey has been outfitted to process mixed plastic containers “using the most advanced sensor-based sorting solutions from Tomra Sorting Recycling to get excellent results in the production of PET flakes and HDPE granules.”

States Vedat Kılıç, board chairman at Burkasan, “We set ourselves the target to produce the best raw materials out of [scrap] plastic by using Tomra’s optical sorting machines.

-Circular economy setback

Covid-19 pandemic and low oil prices shrink the recycled plastic supply chain and undermine the circular economy in Asia and beyond.

Prior to the emergence of the novel coronavirus outbreak, the recycled plastics industry had been making significant progress in its journey to end plastic waste. It was seeing positive results from high consumer and regulatory pressure on brands worldwide to improve their commitments to sustainability.

Private companies, non-profit organisations and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) were all campaigning actively to increase consumer awareness of recycling and sustainability across the value chain. Petrochemical PETBottle Film Automotive

The message was finally getting through at a basic level, setting the stage for a fundamental shift in public attitudes.

-Coca-Cola continues to lead sustainable solutions for plastic recovery and recycling in the Philippines

Plastic—lightweight, strong, and easily molded into various forms—has no doubt revolutionized our everyday lives and has provided convenience in the way we consume products. But, largely due to improper waste management and disposal, plastic has unfortunately given rise to a global waste problem. Petrochemical PETBottle Film Automotive

In the Philippines alone, around 2.7 million metric tons of plastic waste is generated each year, and a huge portion of this finds its way into the environment, choking waterways, polluting the ecosystem, and jeopardizing our biodiversity.

“Any time our packaging ends up anywhere it doesn’t belong is simply unacceptable to us,” said Jonah De Lumen-Pernia, Public Affairs and Sustainability Director of Coca-Cola Philippines. “Coca-Cola has globally committed to building a World Without Waste, and we are striving to make that a reality in the Philippines through various initiatives and partnerships.”
