Crude Oil Prices Trend

Crude Oil Prices Trend

-Indian PE prices supported by strong packaging demand

Indian polyethylene (PE) prices have risen by $45-80/t or around 5-9pc in the past week, supported by strong demand for food packaging material.

High-density PE (HDPE) film prices rose by $80/t to $950-970/t cfr India, while low-density PE (LDPE) linear film prices have increased by $45/t to $930-950/t cfr India.

Packaging is a key downstream sector for PE. Covid-19 lockdowns in India have supported demand for food packaging, as more people order food for home delivery.

-Fakuma postponed to October 2021 based on “rational thinking and a sense of responsibility”

After much speculation and a number of high-profile exhibitors declaring “non-active participation” in the 2020 event, the organisers of Fakuma have postponed the event to 2021. Petrochemicals Graphene CarbonFiber LDPE

Event organisers, P.E. Schall GmBH, said they “fulfilled all prerequisites” to ensure that the 2020 edition of Fakuma, scheduled for 13 – 17 October in Friedrichshafen, Germany, could go ahead from a “hygiene and security” perspective.

However, in a statement, Bettina Schall, Managing Director, confirmed that after holding talks with the exhibitor advisory board, the decision was made to postpone the show until 12 – 16 October 2021.

-Aug Nylon 6 industry development mainly depends on filament

Till the end of July, nylon market has come to a confusing point. Sinopec and Nanjing Fibrant had settled the July contract slightly higher than market expectation, and benzene market had ticked up continuously in recent days. CPL market was temporarily stabilizing.

Influence from benzene is weaker

Since the beginning of July to Jul 27, China domestic benzene prices have consolidated higher from 2,975yuan/mt to 3,430 yuan/mt. As prices jumped up by 130yuan/mt on July 27, caprolactam spot sellers were supported somewhat and hesitated to offer.

However, given a high inventory pressure of port cargoes and full commercial tanks, the price increase in benzene is not seemed a sustainable one. A narrow increase of 300yuan/mt is likely to cap the recent benzene market. Looking into August 2020, the increase in benzene will not be easy, as the piled and upcoming imported cargoes will restrict any possible rebound, and its major downstream project styrene is also meeting obvious obstacles. -LLDPE downtrend pressure remains

LLDPE price has gone through a frantic rise first, and then fluctuated lower continuously. After that, LLDPE futures and spot has returned to a more rational position. On July 27, the mainstream LLDPE futures contract closed at 7050 yuan/mt, and the relevant spot price was basically near this level. The price of domestic goods is slightly higher, and the price of some imported goods of general quality is slightly lower, but the overall price spread is within a reasonable gap. First of all, from the point of view of demand, although the current LLDPE price has retreated, for some industrial chain terminal enterprises, the price level is still high. Then, whether the end-users can afford the high-price raw materials is critical to the market trend. Take agricultural film as an example. At present, the coal-based LLDPE price in North China is still around 7,100yuan/mt.

-SABIC Polycarbonate plant in Spain to operate on 100 per cent renewable power

SABIC’s polycarbonate facility in Cartagena, Spain, is set to become the world’s first large-scale chemical production site to be run entirely on renewable power, following the signing of a major agreement. Petrochemicals Graphene CarbonFiber LDPE

The deal will see Iberdrola, one of the world’s biggest electricity utility companies, invest almost €70m (approx. £63.4m) to construct a 100MW solar PV facility with 263,000 panels, on land owned by SABIC, making it the largest industrial renewable power plant in Europe. The plant is expected to be fully operational in 2024.

-Stimulus may boost resin demand from electric vehicles – Celanese

Governments are adopting economic stimulus packages with sustainability components that could encourage sales of electric vehicles.

That, in turn, should increase demand for resins and other materials used in the vehicles, said Lori Ryerkerk, CEO of Celanese. She made her comments during an earnings conference call. Petrochemicals Graphene CarbonFiber LDPE

Such provisions are prevalent in Europe and Asia, she said.

Trends that increase demand for electric vehicles benefit Celanese’s Engineered Materials segment. “The accessible market for us in electric vehicles is about 30% greater for Celanese products than it is in traditional vehicles,” Ryerkerk said.

-Push for Bio-based Polymers

NSF awards UC Santa Barbara, UCLA $23.7 million for collaboration focused on using natural building blocks to make new materials

Synthetic polymers — think plastic and its chemical cousins — are among the foundations of modern life. Petrochemicals Graphene CarbonFiber LDPE

The ubiquity of such petroleum-based materials has everything to do with their combination of strength, flexibility and chemical inertness, the last being a characteristic that also makes them durable.

Given the environmental impact of plastics and the fact that petroleum deposits are finite, one grand challenge is to develop new sustainable bio-based, high-performance alternatives to petroleum-based polymers.

Harnessing nature to create these materials will be an enormous undertaking, requiring a dramatic change in how polymers are made.

-Houston facility sold and rebranded as MDT Replas

A Florida-based resin supplier recently purchased a recycled plastic blending operation from prime producer LyondellBasell.

Material Difference Technologies (MDT), a Sarasota, Fla.-based company that supplies manufacturers with raw materials and other services, on July 20 announced its purchase of Replas, a Houston-based plastics recycling company.Petrochemicals Graphene CarbonFiber LDPE

The Replas facility, which has been rebranded as MDT Replas, produces custom blends with targeted melt flow, according to a news release. The facility has wash, dry and blend operations that produce recycled pellets for a range of applications.

According to MDT, the Replas facility can produce “a variety of custom formulations with consistent specifications that meet plastic processor requirements at a significant price advantage over prime resin.”

-Mixed market reaction to EU €800/tonne plastics charge as implementation details emerge

The EU’s €800/tonne plastic packaging waste charge, passed by the EU Council last week and which takes effect from January, sent shockwaves through the market because of both its size and narrow timeframe to implementation.

Reaction has so far been mixed, with immediate questions on how it will be calculated, how it will be passed through the supply chain, and whether it will lead to greater regulatory divergence on plastics .Petrochemicals Graphene CarbonFiber LDPE

In the first of a series of insights on the charge we look at the known details that have emerged since the announcements, and the outstanding concerns and questions in the recycling and virgin plastic markets.

The new charge of €800/tonne for all non-recycled packaging waste will be paid by EU nations from 1 January 2021.  National contributions will be calculated by the European Commission using existing reporting obligations under the Packaging Waste Directive (Directive 94/62/ECC) and its implementing Decision (Decision (EU) 2019/665.

-Environmental group takes aim at chemical recycling

A report from activist organization GAIA claims processing strategies that have been heavily promoted by the polymer industry amount to a “greenwashing tactic” undermining efforts to ban single-use plastics.Petrochemicals Graphene CarbonFiber LDPE

Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), a group that opposes waste-to-energy facilities, released a paper July 28 criticizing a family of technologies known as either “chemical recycling” or “advanced recycling.”

As opposed to the traditional process of shredding, melting and molding plastics into new products, chemical recycling uses different processes to break plastics down into other chemicals, which can be used to make fuels, new plastics or many other products.

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) says advanced recycling is a complement to mechanical recycling that can help divert difficult-to-recycle plastics away from landfills to create new products, including food-contact packaging.
