-Dow and Luhai announce partnership to increase the circularity of plastics in China

Dow and Luhai, an integrated waste management company located in Xiamen, China, have announced their collaboration to give plastics waste collected by Luhai a second life, thereby increasing the circularity of plastics in China, as per Dow’s press release.

The agreement is in line with Dow’s new sustainability targets to Stop the Waste by enabling one million metric tons of plastic to be collected, reused or recycled through its direct actions and partnerships by 2030.

Aside from its long history of recycling beverage cartons, Luhai’s waste management operation is focused on collecting and recycling various kinds of post-consumer plastics from waste collected in China. They are currently actively collecting plastic waste from local communities in Xiamen city in Fujian province, with plans to expand to other cities across the country.

Through this strategic partnership, Dow will use its expertise in materials science and application development to create new circular plastic solutions for the Asia Pacific market with from the plastic waste collected by Luhai.

-Evonik and Siemens commission Power-to-X pilot plant in Marl

In Germany, specialty chemicals major Evonik Industries AG (Evonik) and Siemens Gas and Power GmbH & Co. KG (Siemens Energy), the energy technology arm of Siemens AG have officially commissioned a pilot plant sponsored by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) that uses carbon dioxide (CO2) and water to produce chemicals.

Located in Marl, Evonik’s largest site in the northern Ruhr area, the pilot plant’s innovative artificial photosynthesis technology should contribute to the success of the energy revolution. Using renewable electricity, the pilot is an essential part of the Rheticus I and II research projects, announced by the two companies in January 2018 and which are sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with a total of EUR 6.3 million.

-Daqing Lianyi Petrochemical to start up new PP, PE plants in China by late September

Daqing Lianyi Petrochemical Co Ltd is planning to start-up its new polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) plants by end of September 2020, reported CommoPlast with reference to market sources.  Petrochemicals PETrecycled Polyethylene

Based in Daqing, China, the plants consists of a 350,000 tons/year No. 1 PP plant, a 200,000 tons/year No. 2 PP plant and a 400,000 tons/year high density polyethylene (HDPE)/linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) plant.

A source closed to the company informed that PE plant will start with production of LLDPE grade during October, following by HDPE injection during November period, and HDPE pipe during December. Meanwhile, its PP plants will start with homo-PP yarn grade for 2 months, and switching to homo-PP fiber in December.

-Honeywell UOP Polybed to supply high purity Hydrogen for Hengli Petrochemicals

Honeywell UOP announced today that Hengli Petrochemical Co. Ltd. successfully started up seven UOP Polybed™ pressure swing adsorption (PSA) units supplying high-purity hydrogen at its complex in Dalian, Liaoning, China.

As a fully integrated site, the complex produces gasoline and diesel, along with plastics and other chemicals. Hengli will use the PSA units in downstream hydrotreating to create feedstock for petrochemical products, producing approximately 1.4 MM Nm3/h (normal cubic meters per hour) of hydrogen. -Lenzing launches carbon-zero Tencel branded fibres

Following wider corporate commitments made by Lenzing Group in 2019 to drive sustainability and combat climate change, Tencel, Lenzing’s flagship brand for textiles, has introduced its very first carbon-zero Tencel branded lyocell and modal fibres to the market. Available from September, this fibre will help reduce the production emissions.

Asia monoethylene glycol (MEG) spot discussions fell for a fifth day, after prices hit a six-month high in early September, as the start-up of new plants in China weighed on market sentiment.

The start-up of two new plants from Sinochem Quanzhou Petrochemical and Sinopec Zhongke Refining sidelined buyers and end-users, which prompted sellers to reduce prices to boost buying.

“New supply is coming up, so we better wait and see. No need rush to buy,” a downstream end-user said.

Port inventories are still high, so we prefer clearing our positions before China’s National Day holiday (1-8 October) given the unclear market outlook,” a regional trader said.

The organizing committee for the SPE Automotive Composites Conference & Exhibition (ACCE) honored the Best Paper Award Winners for the group’s 20th annual program at its Virtual Event, Sept. 9–11, 2020. The two authors who received the highest average ratings by conference peer reviewers out of a field of 40 contenders were honored for excellence in technical writing and will receive a plaque to commemorate their achievement. Ethan Watt, a fourth-year undergraduate nanocomposites student at the University of Guelph – Bioproducts Discovery and Development Centre, won first place in this year’s ACCE Best Paper Award competition. -Saudi Basic Industries : SABIC launches innovative TF-BOPE FILM for frozen food packaging

SABIC, a global leader in diversified chemicals, has launched a sustainable packaging solution for frozen food which combines a new polyethylene (PE) grade with innovative film production technology. Compared to conventional blow PE film solutions, it offers significantly higher throughput and also has potential for down-gauging, making it attractive from both a commercial and sustainability standpoint.

The solution is based on a mono web TF-BOPE film structure which has a thickness of only 20 micrometers – an unprecedented benefit in this market.
