-The September contract price of paraxylene in Europe increased by EUR210 per ton

The contract price of paraxylene in Europe for September deliveries was agreed at EUR1,160 per ton, which is EUR210 per ton higher than the August contract price for material, ICIS reported on Wednesday, citing confirmation from both buyers and and by the sellers in the market.

The contract price was agreed on the terms of free delivery – FD NWE (North-West Europe).

Thus, the September contract price for material in the region increased by such a large amount after market participants reached its agreement at different levels: the first was EUR1,170 per ton, and the second was EUR1,150 per ton.

-Invista planning investments for increased demand

Invista has been monitoring and forecasting increased demand for the nylon 6,6 value chain and has been planning its capacity investments accordingly. The company is investing hundreds of millions of dollars to bring new, highly advanced capacity online. It is deploying new ADN technology in its existing facilities and setting up an ADN plant in China.

“But in my opinion, the current tightness in the nylon 6,6 value chain isn’t one dimensional. This dynamic is resulting from the combination of increased demand and a few unforeseeable disruptions, such as Hurricane Harvey’s impact on the Gulf Coast of the United States,” Bill Greenfield, president, Invista Intermediates, said.

-Export potential of recycled poly-chips

Amid the fast increase in the use of environment-hostile polythene and plastic products in the country’s urban areas, their economic potential largely remains untapped. Their recycling carries great prospects. That the tonnes of waste produced by these items, bottles in particular, can open new frontiers in the export sector has begun dawning on the entrepreneurs only lately. The episode began with the moderate-scale recycling of the discarded plastic items.

In popular context, the recycling of plastic remains confined to manufacture of mainly household items. Local manufacturers have, thus, been making fruitful use of the plastic wastes. Produced on a limited scale, these recycled products did not show much prospect for export.  With the start of the export of relatively large volumes of recycled PET (polythene terephthalate) chips from discarded plastic products, a new generation of exporters has emerged in the country. Not long ago, the large-scale production of recycled plastic granules and their export was literally an alien idea. Given the rapid expansion of the sector, it can now deserve to be defined as a fledgling industry, and rightfully at that.

-Increased plastic waste collection is the cornerstone for higher recycling rates

Today far too much plastic waste still escapes the European collection system. Of the 60m tonnes of plastics produced annually in the EU, only around 25.5m tonnes are collected and a mere 6.6m tonnes makes its way to recycling. This has a myriad of environmental and economic consequences.

Increasing the circularity of plastics in light of the EU Plastics Strategy hinges on ramping up plastics waste collection. A strong secondary materials market can only be secured through increased collection along with other fundamental measures.

Failing to collect plastic waste leads to a loss of valuable resources, leaving European recyclers of certain product streams in a vulnerable position, unable to meet demand without sufficient flows of input materials.

This is the case for recyclers of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) drinking bottles in Europe, whose recycling capacity exceeds the amount of waste processed. Around 200,000 tonnes of PET recycling capacity in Europe remains unexploited.

-Scrap plastic sampling and sorting guidelines released

Mixed plastics baled for recycling.Public and private entities regularly sample waste streams to glean data on the plastics that could be captured for recycling. Now, guidelines have been developed to standardize the process so results can be compared.

The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) this week unveiled the best management practices for sorting plastics during waste characterization studies. A Sept. 26 webinar introduced the standards to the industry.

Plastic waste characterization studies involve scooping samples of garbage or recyclables, sorting out the plastics and weighing them. The data helps reclaimers, materials recovery facility (MRF) operators, public recycling programs, state governments and others understand what’s in the plastic stream and how it’s changing over time.

-Bio-based Polyethylene Terephthalate Market Expected To Witness Double Digit Growth During The Forecast Period – Credence Research

According to the latest report published by Credence Research, Inc. “Global Bio-based Polyethylene Terephthalate Market – Growth, Future Prospects and Competitive Analysis, 2018-2026,” the global bio-based polyethylene terephthalate market expected to grow at the CAGR of 20.8% from 2018 to 2026.

Due to eco-friendly nature and superior properties than PET, bio-PET is witnessing huge demand from various end-use industries such as food & beverages, cosmetics & pharmaceuticals, automotive, textile and so on. Traditionally, bio-PET comprises 30% bio-based MEG and 70% petroleum-based resins however, many companies are investing to increase the production of bio-based MEG to eradicate the problem of inconsistent supply of raw material for the development of 100% bio-based PET. For instance, Avantium invested in the construction of bio-MEG demonstration plant in the Netherlands, to ramp up the bio-based mono-ethylene glycol (MEG) production made directly from renewable sugars.

-Risk of hard Brexit has these Asian companies on edge

[TOKYO] With only six months left before the UK pulls out of the European Union (EU), the chance of a chaotic exit is spooking Asian companies invested in Britain as they face higher tariffs and costs.

The virtual stalemate in the negotiations since March has left many firms on edge. The talks have stalled on the question of how to avoid police and customs checks on the border between the UK and Ireland.

“If there’s a no deal Brexit, there will be very serious impact on Japanese corporations and we’d like them to avoid that situation,” said Hiroaki Nakanishi, chairman of the country’s largest business lobby, Keidanren. “It’s natural to assume that Japanese companies may start leaving the UK.”

-Asia benzene up on firm crude; ample supply to cap further gains

Asia’s spot benzene prices were firmer despite the week-long holidays in the key Chinese market, riding on strong crude ahead of the US sanctions on Iran.

– China inventories may rise post-holiday

– China domestic benzene at parity with import prices

Spot benzene prices breached $880/tonne FOB (free on board) Korea this week as Brent crude futures rose to around the mid-$80/bbl levels, their highest in nearly four years.

On 28 September, spot benzene prices closed at $862.5/tonne FOB Korea, ICIS data showed.

China is currently on a week-long National Day holiday on 1-7 October.

-Synthetic solutions grow alongside project demands

Rigging gear that utilizes synthetic materials will play a huge role in the future of rigging gear, according to Samson Market Strategy Manager Justin Smoak.

“As today’s construction payloads continue to push the limits of engineered lifting, traditional rigging has become heavier – and therefore more difficult to handle – and potentially more dangerous,” he said. “As lifting complexity increases, so does the possibility of costly delays, safety risks and increased operating expenses for construction contractors and lift planners.”
