– What’s next for automotive nonwovens?

At the forthcoming EDANA International Nonwovens Symposium (INS) to be held online from June 9-10th, Sustainable Nonwovens consulting editor Adrian Wilson will outline the current threats and opportunities for automotive nonwovens.

Nonwovens have expanded rapidly in the automotive sector over the past two decades as automakers and their component suppliers have looked to decrease costs by reducing the weight of vehicles

The aim has largely been to lower fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and comply with new legislation.

The use of nonwoven fabrics in the European automotive industry alone grew by 11.3% per year between 2010 and 2015, despite the fact that the production of cars and light vehicles in Europe grew by only an average 1.3% annually in the same years.

This growth has now slowed, but it underlines just how much nonwovens have been included in the light-weighting designs of vehicle manufacturers and reveals that a good deal of material substitution has already taken place.

-Evergreen to double manufacturing capacity of food grade rPET

With demand for recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) surging, Evergeen will be doubling the manufacturing capacity of rPET pellets at the company’s recycling and manufacturing facility in Clyde, Ohio.

When the expansion is complete, capacity will expand from 40 million pounds of rPET annually to 80 million pounds, making Evergreen among the largest producers of rPET resin in the Midwest.  PETBottlesRecycling Automotive Chemicals

The exciting plans include constructing a new, 54,000-square-foot building adjacent to the current 238,000-square foot facility.

The addition will house a new high-volume, food-grade rPET  manufacturing line. Once installed and running, Evergreen will have three rPET manufacturing lines to produce the in-demand recycled material that food and beverage, health and beauty, and other consumer products companies are clamoring to include in their plastic packaging.

-Hyundai Oilbank Expediting Penetration of Hydrogen Market

Hyundai Oilbank announced on May 10 that it has recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Korea South East Power for cooperation in the renewable energy business. The two companies will consider jointly promoting renewable energy generation projects using hydrogen fuel cells.

The two sides also agreed to establish a joint venture to combine Hyundai Oilbank’s expertise in hydrogen production and supply and Korea South East Power’s rich know-how in operating fuel cell power plants. According to a government plan, domestic hydrogen fuel cell power generation capacity will increase to 8 GW by 2040, about 12 times the current 650MW, with the annual market size expected to reach about 7 trillion won.  PETBottlesRecycling Automotive Chemicals

Hyundai Oilbank is preparing to build a sustainable blue hydrogen ecosystem where the company produces 100,000 tons of hydrogen annually from crude oil refining by-products and natural gas and supply it as transportation and power generation fuels and converts carbon generated in the process into building materials, dry ice, and fertilizers.

Earlier, Hyundai Oilbank signed a memorandum of understanding with Air Products, the world’s largest hydrogen producer, to upgrade its hydrogen technology.

In March, Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, the parent company of Hyundai Oilbank, announced Hydrogen Dream 2030, the group’s hydrogen business vision, to build a hydrogen value chain ranging from hydrogen production to transportation, storage and utilization on land and sea. Hyundai Oilbank has selected blue hydrogen as one of its top three eco-friendly future projects along with white bio and eco-friendly chemical materials. Blue hydrogen is currently considered the most economical eco-friendly hydrogen production method thanks to its low manufacturing cost and high production efficiency compared to green hydrogen.

-Trinseo raises May PC prices in Europe

Trinseo, a global materials company and manufacturer of plastics, latex binders and synthetic rubber, and its affiliate companies in Europe have announced a price increase for all polycarbonate (PC) grades in Europe, as per the company’s press release as of May 4.  PETBottlesRecycling Automotive Chemicals

Effective Mayl 1, 2020, or as existing contract terms allow, the contract and spot PC prices for the products listed below increased as follows:

– CALIBRE PC resins – by EUR510 per metric ton.

As MRC informed earlier, Trinseo last raised its prices for all PC grades in Europe on April 1, 2021 by EUR400 per metric ton.

According to MRC’s ScanPlast report, overall estimated consumption of PC granules in the Russian market totalled 25,000 tonnes in the first quarter of 2021 (excluding imports and exports to/from Belarus), compared to 22,700 tonnes a year earlier. Demand increased by 10%.

-Acrylic fiber price direction in May, 2021

There is a topic on the market currently that acrylic fiber prices will climb up in May. Some market players have doubt about this, as it may be proper to stabilize prices for a while after a sharp fall of 2,500yuan/mt. We consider that this shall be concerned from the actual situation.

Eyes shall be put on the profits first By end Apr, acrylic fiber profits have turned from positive to negative after large price fall, and the deficits reach about 1,000yuan/mt. Considering the production cut and lower operating rate, the actual losses may be larger. Producers are unwilling to sell mostly with losses, and the most direct method to improve the cash flow is to raise the prices. Therefore, it is rational to raise prices in May.  PETBottlesRecycling Automotive Chemicals

Another way is to lower feedstock costs. As ACN plant inventory sees no obvious pressure, it is risky to lower the acrylic fiber costs by lower ACN prices. In Apr, ACN prices saw rapid decline first, but prices rebounded later with the impending settlement prices, and finally, the settlement prices have not reached the expectations of market players.

-Suspension of China-Australian Economic Dialogue may impact much on Australian cotton exports

China’s top economic planner, the National Development and Reform Commission, issued a rare statement on the first day returning from May Day holiday, announcing the suspension of the China-Australia Strategic Economic Dialogue, a key intergovernmental dialogue between the two major Pacific economies. This move may result into long-term heavy block of Australian cotton exports, while its influence on China is supposed to be limited.  PETBottlesRecycling Automotive Chemicals

  1. Australian cotton exports rely heavily on the Chinese market

According to the Australian Department of Agriculture and Water Resources, after the Australian cotton production in 2019/20 hit a record low of 134,000 tons in recent years, its 2020/21 cotton production may recover to 562,000 tons due to improved rainfall and normal weather, and the cotton production in the next five years may remain at 350,000-760,000 tons. The export volumes of cotton may also rise from a low level to 350,000-620,000 tons. Its export dependency may rise from 46.3% in 2020/21 season to be above 100%. Later, with the recovery of cotton production, the export dependence of cotton will also increase obviously.

-PET Base Tooling for Oval Bottles Boosts Stability, Trims Weight

Sidel’s new StarLITE HPC base design boosts bottle stability by up to 25%, cuts weight, and enables faster blowing and lower blowing pressure.

A new base design for oval PET bottles is said to offer multiple processing and performance benefits. Foremost among them is up to 25% improved container stability, both empty and filled.  PETBottlesRecycling Automotive Chemicals

The StarLITE HPC base from Sidel employs an “anti-rock” design based on 360° continuous contact surface that is said to improve tilt angle and may be combined with structural ribs and oval push-up.

The asymmetric, structured base design reportedly improves material distribution, prevents unexpected base roll-out, and contributes to lightweighting opportunities, such as a 0.5 g reduction for a 500-ml container.

The doubled sitting surface and balanced stretching ratios between short and long sides enable better material distribution while avoiding base sagging, explains Sidel packaging expert Laurent Naveau.
