-Nestlé signs up to European Plastics Pact to push for 100% recyclable or reusable packaging

Food and beverage giant Nestlé has announced that its European business is following in the footsteps of its UK operations by signing up to the European Plastics Pact to help achieve its goals of ensuring packaging is 100% reusable or recyclable by 2025.

Nestlé UK and Ireland was a founding member of the world’s first plastic pact, launched in the UK by WRAP in 2018. The company has now committed to a European version of the pact, convened by France and the Netherlands, to promote the circular economy across its European markets.

The European Plastics Pact commits signatories to reducing virgin plastic products and packaging by at least 20%, raising the collection and recycling capacity of plastics in Europe by at least 25% and boosting the use of recycled content in plastic packaging to an average of 30%.  Petrochemicals Closed Loop PEF

Forty-eight hours ahead of schedule, Sinopec Corp, China’s leading energy and chemical company, put its first melt-blown non-woven fabric assembly line into operation at its Yanshan factory in Beijing on March 6. The Yanshan factory is a converted 3600 square meter old warehouse that has found new life as a global production base following the challenges brought by the coronavirus outbreak.

The 14,400-ton capacity Yanshan facility is one of Sinopec’s two melt-blown non-woven fabric assembly bases and is co-managed with China National Machinery Industry Corporation. The base has two non-woven production lines and three spunbond production lines and can produce up to 4 tons of melt-blown fabric for 1.2 million N95 disposable masks or 6 tons for 6 million disposable masks per day.Petrochemicals Closed Loop PEF

-Eastman Talks Increasing Demand for Recycled Materials

Holli Alexander, Eastman’s strategic initiative manager of global sustainability, discusses the company’s recycling initiatives.

I recently attended the Plastics Recycling Conference in Nashville, Tenn. Much talk centered on how brand owner commitments to using more recycled material are placing an increasing amount of importance on obtaining recycled feedstock. This prompts an important question: where is this additional material going to come from?

Last year, we saw lots of new announcements from material companies getting involved in the recycled arena. One big player is Eastman, which sees sourcing recycled feedstock as both a “challenge and an opportunity” for the industry.Petrochemicals Closed Loop PEF

-US PE tariff exemptions

Several importers and trading firms have received approvals for tariff exemptions on US-origin linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), about two weeks after the Chinese government announced the initiative as part of easing trade tensions with the west.

The approvals for tariff exemptions on polyethylene (PE) came after successful applications for local propane dehydrogenation (PDH) operators who will also receive exemptions on US-origin propane imports.Petrochemicals Closed Loop PEF

AQUAFIL – An equity security undervalued by 126% and in line with the green economy. Buy now ( Italian Language Only)
There is a stock in Piazza Affari that could be an excellent medium / long-term opportunity: Aquafil (MIL: ECNL).
The company has a very interesting history and owes its leadership in the eco-friendly synthetic fibers sector to its CEO and President Bonazzi. In fact, the company was born as a yarn manufacturer.

However, everything changed in 1998, when Bonazzi was invited to participate in a company trip in which an American entrepreneur, of whom Aquafil is a supplier, decided to share with all his collaborators the project of becoming a green company by 2020 through the exclusive use of recycled materials. The American entrepreneur is Ray Anderson, founder and president of Interface Inc.
Bonazzi accepts the challenge and launches into this sector. Thus was born Econyl, the ecological nylon obtained mainly from fishing nets and disused carpeting. Today Aquafil is not only the main supplier of Interface, but its Econyl is used all over the world by important companies. For example, it is widely used in Prada’s creations and an agreement has recently been signed with Safilo. The goal is to create the first eco-sustainable glasses.
The interesting project and the fashion trend to take great care of the green aspect, however,so far they have not served to get the stock to take off. From the listing that took place in April 2017 to today, in fact, the stock has lost about 60%, while from the historical highs it has lost about 70%.Petrochemicals Closed Loop PEF
This performance contrasts both with the analysts’ judgment and with the conclusion obtained by looking at fair value. For the former, in fact, Aquafil is underestimated on average by 126% with a BUY consensus, buy immediately .. In the case of fair value, on the other hand, the underestimation is around 50%.

-In Denim, Investing in Sustainable Technology Is the New Normal

Eco-friendly denim is more ubiquitous than ever, but bringing it to market hasn’t been easy. Nor cheap, for that matter.

While planet-pandering technologies—think Jeanologia’s water-sipping denim-finishing systems, Tonello’s bleach-less OBleach or Archroma’s botanically derived EarthColors—are increasingly available, they also require upfront costs from the mills that employ them.

“Sustainability is really linked to research and innovation,” said Francesca Polato, marketing manager at Berto in Italy. “If the company doesn’t invest, there is no innovation and, as a consequence, there is no sustainability.”  Petrochemicals Closed Loop PEF

-OPEC, allies fail to reach deal on oil production cuts

OPEC and its allies failed to reach a deal on oil production cuts on Friday, after Moscow refused to tighten supply to counter the effects of the coronavirus outbreak.

The day before, OPEC ministers had recommended reducing output by 1.5 million barrels per day in face of the global slowdown caused by the epidemic and the resulting fall in demand for oil. Petrochemicals Closed Loop PEF

But the decision hinged on agreement from the so-called OPEC+ grouping — Russia foremost among them

And on Friday, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said that the talks between OPEC and his OPEC+ grouping had failed to bring about a deal.

-The Truth About Bioplastic

If you’re not the type to bring a reusable bag to the store, bioplastics have become an increasingly attractive alternative to the plastic that is slowly strangling the oceans, rivers, municipalities, and the very sediment record of Earth itself.

The name itself evokes nature, the packaging is often coloured green, the labels highlight how it was made from corn or compostable.Petrochemicals Closed Loop PEF

There’s something sweetly seductive looking at a bioplastic cup and imagining it ending up in a huge compost pile where it will natural degrade over a few weeks or months into fertiliser that can be used to grow more corn.
