ALPLA Group, an international specialist for plastic packaging and recycling, is building a factory in the province of Gauteng, South Africa, for manufacturing according to the latest production standards.
The groundbreaking work began in February 2020 and completion of the building is scheduled for summer 2021.
Since 2015, ALPLA has significantly expanded its market presence in Africa with acquisitions and co-operation agreements. This included the acquisition of the African market leader for PET preforms, PET bottles and closures Boxmore Packaging in 2017.
-EURATEX — The New EU Industrial Strategy: How Do We Get From Principles To Practice?
EURATEX welcomes the proposed new EU industrial strategy but wonders how the proposed principles will be put into practice; reality checks and close monitoring of the implementation of the strategy will be essential to make a positive and sustainable impact.
The European textiles and apparel industry, worth nearly €180 bln and including 171,000 companies, is an essential pillar of the European industry. It is a very globalised industry with extensive value chains across different continents.Petrochemicals ClosedLoop Crude Oil
Understanding how polyester is made is a good place to start.
Polyester, or polyethylene terephthalate, is made from a chemical reaction involving crude oil, air and water. Petrochemicals ClosedLoop Crude Oil
The idea of synthetic polymers was first conceived in 1926 at the labs of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Co. in the United States, but the early research stalled.
That work by W.H. Carothers, which involved mixing ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid, was later picked up by British scientists John Whinfield and James Dickson, who patented polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or PETE in 1941, according to What is Polyester.
-Use a DOE to Improve Consistency of Your Resin-Drying Process
Hygroscopic polymers such as PET, ABS, TPU, PC, nylon, and many others absorb moisture from the surrounding environment.
These types of polymers have a polar molecular structure that attracts the polar water molecules from the air. Petrochemicals ClosedLoop Crude Oil
If these materials are processed with high moisture content, the high temperature causes a chemical reaction (hydrolysis) that breaks the polymer chain into smaller molecular weights.
Prior to processing, hygroscopic materials must be properly dried to prevent processing issues and poor end-product performance.
-Versalis joins the Circular Plastics Alliance
The newest member of the Circular Plastics Alliance is Versalis, the chemicals arm of Italian energy company Eni.
The Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA)is an initiative under the 2018 European Strategy for Plastics, which calls on stakeholders in the plastics industry to actively contribute to achieving the ambitious European target of using 10 million tonnes of recycled plastic in new products by 2025.Petrochemicals ClosedLoop Crude Oil
Signatories sign a declaration pledging among other things to increase the uptake of recycled plastics in all plastic products, whilst ensuring product quality and safety.
-UK Government announces plans for £200/tonne plastic tax during Budget 2020
The UK Government has announced plans to implement a £200/tonne tax on virgin plastics during Budget 2020 on Wednesday.
The consultation, which will run until 20 May 2020, proposes a Plastics Packaging Tax which “will apply at a rate of £200 per tonne of plastic packaging which does not contain at least 30% recycled plastic. This will apply to plastic packaging which has been manufactured in, or imported into, the UK,” according to the policy consultation document.
“The government will keep the rate of the tax and the 30% recycled plastic threshold under review to ensure that the tax remains effective in increasing the use of recycled plastic,” the document added.Petrochemicals ClosedLoop Crude Oil
-FDA issues letters for HDPE and PET recycling
Erema Group got the go-ahead to use its technology to recycle HDPE into food and drink packaging and foodservice wares. Meanwhile, other companies got federal green lights for PET recycling.
Over the past seven months, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued three letters of no objection (LNOs) to companies involved in plastics recycling. The letters allow reclaimers to use their recycling technologies to produce recycled resin for use in food and drink packaging.Petrochemicals ClosedLoop Crude Oil
In issuing the letters, the FDA was convinced the recycling processes would result in contaminant concentrations of 0.5 parts per billion or less in the food, below its “threshold of regulatory concern.”
-Europe ethylene output could decrease up to 8% in 2020 on coronavirus – ICIS
Coronavirus impact could cut Europe ethylene production by as much as 1.68m tonnes in 2020, compared with 2019, with cracker turnarounds and even force majeures common place in the second quarter, according to analysis by ICIS.
These preliminary scenarios assume a drop in operating rates in the second quarter of 2020 as the coronavirus hits downstream demand, pricing, and margins, according to Paolo Scafetta, ICIS Senior Analyst, Olefins.Petrochemicals ClosedLoop Crude Oil
-Asian petrochemicals reel; coronavirus pandemic to batter global demand
Asia’s major petrochemical markets weakened on Thursday, tracking heavy losses in upstream energy and regional stock markets after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the novel coronavirus a pandemic.Petrochemicals ClosedLoop Crude Oil
Global efforts to contain the unabated spread of the virus are expected to significantly hit consumer demand which does not bode well for petrochemicals.
-Recycled PET honeycomb now commercially viable using EconCore’s technology
rPET honeycomb is now commercially ready and available to license from EconCore.
The company successfully conducted two years of research, learning how to optimally process the reusable resource-based polymer into its continuously produced honeycomb core.Petrochemicals ClosedLoop Crude Oil
The benefit is a substantial fall in CO2, along with the already established CO2 reductions from the honeycomb technology in many transportation applications, due to the fuel and energy savings during the in-service use of lower weight products.
