-China’s Tsingshan, Huafon plan $3bln coke, chemical project in Indonesia
The two companies signed a deal to jointly build the base
China’s Tsingshan Holding Group, a major stainless steel and nickel producer, and chemicals firm Huafon Group plan to set up a $3 billion metallurgy and chemical production base in Indonesia, Huafon said in a statement
The two companies, both based in eastern China’s Zhejiang province, on Tuesday signed a deal to jointly build the base, which will include a 12 million tonnes per year capacity coke plant, on the island of Sulawesi
-Asia PX faces supply glut in near term on new capacity expansions
Asian paraxylene (PX) markets might face a supply glut in the short term on the back of new capacity start-ups, while downstream demand continues to be weak.
A total of 6.5m tonnes/year of new PX capacities are expected to come online by the end of the year.
In China, Sinopec Hainan plans to start up its new 1m tonne/year PX facility in October, while Zhejiang Petrochemical targets to start up its new 4m tonnes/year PX complex in November-December period.

BASF has agreed the sale of itspigments business for €1.15bn to Japanese firmDIC, the German major said on Thursday.
The announcementfollows financial services company Moody’s reviewing BASF’scredit rating as the producer slashed its2019 earnings forecast in the wake of a weakfirst half.

Middle East producers are expressing concerns about narrowing premiums between polypropylene (PP) raffia and block co-polymer premiums in Asia.
PP co-polymer prices typically command a $50-80/t premium over raffia in Asia but this has narrowed significantly. Middle East producers have maintained export premiums of $30/t in recent weeks but have struggled to find willing buyers.
Mideast Gulf producers are regular sellers of PP co-polymer to southeast Asia and China.

This week, polypropylene prices across the Asian regions dropped. The price fall, was triggered by persistent bearish demand trends and a sharp fall in PP futures, on the Dalian Commodity Exchange in China.
A PP trader while in conversation with a Polymerupdate team member said, “buyers in key markets like China, continued to remain on the side line, owing to the persistent weakening of Yuan against the U.S. dollar and the onging trade war against the United States. This in turn, has impacted the demand trends across the other Asian regions.”

North American polyethylene resin prices continued a confusing summer in August, while regional prices for PVC and PET bottle resin were down for the month as well.
PE resin pricing has been the cause of much debate for most of the summer. Some PE buyers saw a 3-cent price drop in June. That 3-cent drop later spread through the rest of the market, reaching most buyers by the end of July.
