-Chinese Create PCF from FDCA and May Disrupt PET and PEF

The bio-based polyester demonstrated great potential and could be used as engineering plastic. ……………………………………

PCF (poly(1,4-cyclohexanedimethylene furandicarboxylate) was synthesized from FDCA and CHDM with different steric conformation.

The melting temperature of PCF could be up to 294 °C and its crystallization half-time could be only several seconds.

-Novamont Launches New Bioplastics Plant to Boost Production

Italian bio-plastics company Novamont has opened its revamped Mater-Biopolymer plant to the south of Rome with a significantly boosted production capacity, going from from 120,000 to 150,000 tonnes per year.

The converted facility, which previously manufactured PET, will allow Novamont to increase its production of ORIGO–BI® renewable biopolyesters and MATER-BI® compostable bioplastics, which have been used to replace traditional plastics in products varying from coffee cups and carrier bags to cutlery and straws.

Novamont’s total investment in the facility, located in the town of Patrica, comes to €70 million (£61.9 million), which is set to rise to €100 million (£88.5 million) over the next three years. Some 90 people are employed at the 120,000m² site.

-Circular economy

A multi-pronged approach is required to make business sustainable

Nepal, with its amazing but fragile biodiversity, has an opportunity to lead the global discourse if a few sustainable efforts can emerge towards building a circular economy

At the Responsible Business Summit in Singapore co-hosted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the discussion on one of the streams was Circular Economy. The phrase has been there for three decades, but as the climate change discourse is building, the discourse around circular economy has increased.

Circular Economy is much understood as something to deal with recycling only; the concept is broader that touches from rethinking, design and system to usage.

-Beverage leaders call for industry-wide approach to sustainability

The bottled water industry is on a journey and trying to not only end plastics waste, but to completely disrupt the concept of single use consumption and production, explained Maurizio Patarnello, chief executive of Nestlé Waters.

“This is a journey because we don’t have the answers yet. This is about trying, testing, learning and trying again,” he said whilst speaking at the annual 15th Global Bottled Water Congress in Evian, France.

“PET is the preferred packaging material in the bottled water industry because it combines beverage protection with lightness, resistance and transparency. And, of course, it’s also 100 per cent recyclable.

-UK stocking up on polymers, fuels ahead of a potential ‘hard Brexit’

UK petrochemicals and fuel buyers are stocking up on gasoline components, polymers and glycerine in preparation for a potential hard Brexit, the possibility the country may leave the EU in 2019 without having reached a trade agreement with the bloc.

– Higher prices on weaker pound not deterring stock up

– Moves described as ‘panic buying’ by a UK port proprietor

– Warehouse space running low, some products in short supply

However, some products are in shorter supply and that is making difficult to secure additional materials.

The UK is a net importer of polymers, with many products like engineering plastics feeding into the country’s strong automotive and housing industries.

Reliance on imported petroleum products has also soared in the last decade, with the UK importing 9.5m tonnes more than it exported in petroleum products in 2015, according to government statistics.
