-Carbon dioxide generated then recycled in polymerisation bicycle

Zinc catalyst links two polymerisation reactions to grow block copolymer

UK researchers have developed a new system that combines two polymerisation reactions to produce a block copolymer whilst recycling waste carbon dioxide from one reaction into the other, all using a single catalyst.

Aliphatic polyesters and polycarbonates are gaining attention as possible substitutes for petroleum-derived plastics. Biological and chemical transformations can produce their monomers from biomass, and it’s possible to combine these monomers to give diverse polymers with versatile physical characteristics. -Building partnerships for a world without waste in Africa

It’s clear that the world has a packaging problem. Plastic pollution, one of the most visible challenges of our time, is too big for any government, company or community to solve on their own.

However, we believe it is one we can conquer if we work together and each take responsibility for our part in the chain.

While food and beverage packaging is an important part of our modern lives, like many companies that make products we all love, The Coca-Cola Company recognises that our packaging has contributed to this global challenge.

Because our business relies on bottles and cans, we share a responsibility to help ensure that the world has a more sustainable packaging system in place.

-New cotton-like polyester fabric for athleisure

Teijin Frontier, the Teijin Group’s fibres and products converting company, has developed a new cotton-like high-performance polyester material for athleisure fashion.

The new material has been developed to combine the look and texture of cotton with superior properties for moisture absorption, quick drying and UV protection.

Notably, the cotton-like features are achieved with polyester filament yarn, not a staple fibre. What’s more, Teijin Frontier’s new material is eco-friendly because it is made with recycled raw materials.

-Crude oil rises on supply cuts, but weak economy holds market back

Slowing demand has also contributed to a slump into negative territory in refining profits for Asian naphtha, an important feedstock for the petroleum industry, to levels not seen in over a decade.

Singapore: Oil prices rose on Monday after Saudi Arabia said producer club OPEC and Russia should restrict supplies to current levels, while Washington’s withdrawal of a tariff threat against Mexico removed a cloud over the global economy. However, traders said concerns about the health of the global economy and the impact on fuel demand were still weighing on oil market sentiment.

Front-month Brent crude futures were at $63.61 at 0645 GMT, 32 cents, or 0.5%, above Friday’s close. US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at $54.32 per barrel, 33 cents, or 0.6%.

-IBM Researchers Develop Radical New Recycling Process for Old Plastic

Currently, more than 272 million metric tons of plastic are produced each year around the globe, with one-quarter of that made up of PET.

To help to solve this big problem, IBM researchers have created a new technology called VolCat, a catalytic chemical process that can turn PET, a type of plastic commonly used in food packaging and polyester clothing, into a renewable resource.

The device has the ability to break down fabric made of a cotton and polyester blend. The machine will separate the two materials, spinning the natural cotton fibres into a ball, and breaking down the polyester into a powder.

-Use of plastics in India growing, but nearly 80% PET bottles recycled

With recycling being the buzz word for sustainability, many brands of footwear and garments are now beginning to use polyester yarns made out of recycled PET bottles.

With the plastic menace extending from Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak, all the way deep into the oceans, there has been a global effort to make an attempt to formulate the best ways to recycle and reuse plastics.

According to official data shared by companies that recycle and reuse plastics, though India’s per capita plastic consumption is growing steadily, it is heartening to learn that nearly 80 per cent of the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, commonly used to package mineral water or juice, are collected and recycled. India, in this case, has even beaten the world’s most advanced countries like the US or even the European countries.
