-Celebrating 10 years of pellet loss mitigation and contributing to the health of our oceans  Thermoplastics Petrochemicals Sustainability

Adela Putinelu, Sustainability Issues Executive at the British Plastics Federation, marks 10-years of Operation Clean Sweep, the international industry initiative to stop plastic pellet loss to the environment, with a special report looking at progress so far and next steps.

The health of our oceans is under increased threat from a suite of different anthropogenic activities with detrimental effects on marine ecosystems. Some of these include acidification, land runoff, overfishing and plastic waste pollution. Societal failure to tackle littering and to ensure effective waste management practices are in place has resulted in heightened levels of plastic waste from land-based sources escaping into the marine environment.

-Avantium to build 5 ktpa FDCA, PEF flagship plant Thermoplastics Petrochemicals Sustainabilit

Avantium held its first Technology & Markets Day titled “Path to a fossil-free world” yesterday at the company’s headquarters in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The management team provided an update on the strategy of Avantium and its technologies, including the strategy for Synvina and commercialization of PEF.

Avantium announced that it intends to build a cash-flow positive flagship plant with a planned annual capacity of 5,000 tons of FDCA (furandicarboxylic acid) and PEF (polyethylene furanoate) slated to start-up in 2023.  The plant will produce materials for high-value markets and performance applications such as high-barrier films and specialty bottles.

-Plastics Recyclers Europe releases plastic sorting guidance

Plastic packaging represents the biggest share of the European plastic demand and the waste generated and collected for recycling in Europe.

However, only 42 per cent of plastic packaging waste is recycled in Europe, highlighting the need for more sustainable and effective waste management practices.

In order to recapture the true value of packaging and regenerate it into high-quality products, the industry must focus on optimising current reprocessing practices. Increasing the amount and – more importantly – the quality of recycled output is directly affected by the quality of sorting practices.

-Plastics machinery shipments decline in first quarter

The shipments value of primary plastics machinery in North America declined in the first quarter of 2019, according to the statistics compiled and reported by the Plastics Industry Association’s Committee on Equipment Statistics.

While 2018 ended with strong plastics machinery shipments, 2019 has started soft, with the preliminary estimate of the shipments value from reporting companies totalling $273 million, 27.6 per cent lower than the fourth quarter of 2018.

-Coca-Cola targets 100% collection, recycling of packaging by 2030

IN a bid to reduce plastic waste in the country, Coca-Cola Philippines introduced a road map towards packaging sustainability, which includes building a P1-billion recycling facility in the country.

This was in line with the company’s global campaign “World Without Waste” that started in 2018 that seeks to collect and recycle the same amount of plastic bottles it generates by 2030. Thermoplastics Petrochemicals Sustainability

“With our primary packaging in the Philippines being 100% recyclable, we see the potential of capturing its value by creating new and better approaches toward reprocessing and recycling recyclable plastic,” Coca-Cola Philippines President and General Manager Winn Everhart said in a statement.

-BP: Petrochemicals Drive U.S. Oil Demand Boom

The United States saw its crude oil and liquids demand jump in 2018 at its fastest pace in over a decade on the back of growing petrochemical plant capacity that uses increased volumes of ethane from shale, according to BP.

U.S. oil demand grew by 500,000 bpd, or 2.5 percent, to 20.46 million bpd last year, S&P Global Platts quoted BP as saying in its 2019 Statistical Review of World Energy.

Production of oil and natural gas liquids (NGL) from shale plays in the United States rose by 2.2 million bpd in 2018, according to BP’s review. Thermoplastics Petrochemicals Sustainability

-China vows to fight as US threatens to impose more tariffs

China will firmly respond and fight if the US insists on escalating trade frictions, while keeping its door open for talks to resolve the dispute, the Chinese foreign ministry said on Tuesday.

US President Donald Trump said on Monday that Washington may impose punitive tariffs on additional $300bn Chinese imports if no deal is reached with China President Xi Jinping during the G20 summit in late June.

Whether the two leaders will meet at the G20 forum in Osaka, Japan, “China no information to reveal so far”, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a regular news briefing on Tuesday.

“China’s position on trade issues is very clear and firm. We don’t want to fight a trade war, but is not [afraid] of fighting the war,” he said.

-Weekly resin report: Spot PE, PP prices slide

Resin trading slowed a bit as we rolled into June: Offers were plentiful, prices were weaker and completed volumes tallied a tad below average, said the PlasticsExchange (Chicago) in its Market Update. A short-lived bull run in May was met with sharply lower energy and feedstock costs along with falling international resin prices, which has quickly shaken sentiment back to neutral, at best.

Spot polyethylene (PE) prices slid $0.01 to 0.02/lb last week, which threatens producers’ ability to implement their current $0.03/lb increase, though the April $0.03/lb increase remains intact. Spot polypropylene (PP) prices saw a similar decline last week, and the recent $0.045/lb cost-push increase enabled for May might already be peeled back in June. Resin export demand is strong, but at lower bids, which suppliers have not been eager to chase, at least not yet. Thermoplastics Petrochemicals Sustainability

-Cyborg bacteria could be stored in local pools where family homes and businesses pump their CO2 waste to, suggest researchers.

Scientists have developed new organisms which can take carbon dioxide and nitrogen from the atmosphere and use it to produce plastics and fuels.

The nano-bio hybrid organisms are a “promising first step toward low-cost carbon sequestration” and eco-friendly plastics manufacturing, according to the University of Colorado.

Using light-activated quantum dots to activate special enzymes within microbial cells, the scientists have created “living factories” which eat harmful CO2.

This is then transformed into useful products such as biodegradable plastic, gasoline, ammonia and bio-diesel, the researchers claim.Thermoplastics Petrochemicals Sustainability

-Argentina gets its first 100% recycled and recyclable dishwash bottle

In Argentina, consumers throw away around 12 million plastic bottles every day and yet less than a quarter of these get recycled. Our Cif brand is helping to tackle that problem with the launch of a 100% recycled and recyclable PET bottle.

“We believe that collective action is the only way to drive the transformational change needed to reach our sustainability goals.”

Since 2014, the brand has been working to incorporate more post-consumer recycled (PCR) PET* into its Cif Active Gel bottles. It reached 50% in 2017 and this year managed to achieve 100% in the packaging across the entire range.

Cif is the first dishwash brand in Argentina to put such an innovation on the supermarket shelves. But getting to this milestone wasn’t easy.
