Tomra recyclingTomra Sorting GmbH, a German maker of plastic sorting technology, has signed up as a member of the New Plastics Economy, a three-year initiative working toward a global plastics system guided by the principles of a circular economy.Tomra recycling

Led by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the effort brings together business, governments, scientists and citizens to move toward a more-effective global system for plastics. Its three main goals are to create an improved after-use economy for plastics, reduce the leakage of plastics into natural systems and decouple the production of plastics from fossil fuel-based feedstocks.

“Working with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation as a member of the New Plastics Economy network is a good opportunity to further our efforts to reshape the way plastic is used and recycled around the world,” said Tomra President and CEO Stefan Ranstrand. “The initiative’s objectives complement our own vision of leading the resource revolution and help to develop a circular economy for plastics.”

Ranstrand said marine litter will be Tomra’s main focus as a member of the initiative. Tomra is based in Mülheim-Kärlich, Germany.

The New Plastics Economy presented its latest research findings to business and government leaders at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, Jan. 17-20.
