-Yarn producers still depend on Swiss tech: Swissmem

For both high-volume segments and niches, Swiss textile machinery members have the innovative strength and the market focus to drive business success for spinners and synthetic fibre producers worldwide. Petrochemical Bioadipic acid

Even today, when global yarn production has largely migrated eastwards, Switzerland continues to provide the innovative technology those mills need.

Switzerland has historic roots in the yarn spinning business, stretching back more than 200 years. Its thriving mills were among the earliest to embrace industrialisation, at the start of the 19th Century – initially importing equipment from Britain, but soon switching to the first Swiss-made spinning frames which were the foundation for the modern successful machine-building sector, according to Swissmem.

-Can laboratories move away from single-use plastic?

Finding alternatives to single-use plastic won’t be easy for scientists, but here are some of the ways that they are starting to change their habits  Petrochemical Bioadipic acid

In September, PhD student Samantha Seah challenged herself to collect all the plastic and nitrile waste she used in her lab in one day. Pipette tips, tubes, gloves, they quickly added up. At the end of her working day, Seah, who studies droplet microfluidics at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, weighed the waste. It totaled 230 g. In a year, she estimates, that would add up to about 60 kg, or the weight of a small person.

-Texas hit hard by shale slowdown

Texas hit hard by shale slowdown Texas’ economy is perhaps the most vulnerable to oil price swings given its leading role in the country’s oil industry. Recently, as prices have remained low, talk has begun about the outlook for the state’s economy.

According to a recent Reuters report, for example, smaller independent oil and gas producers in the Lone Star State are struggling to get loans from banks as the latter become increasingly wary of the ability of the borrowers to return the money when the time comes.

-Bioplastics and biodegradable plastics

From cars to food wrap and from planes to pens, you can make anything and everything from plastics—unquestionably the world’s most versatile materials.

But there’s a snag. Plastics are synthetic (artificially created) chemicals that don’t belong in our world and don’t mix well with nature.

Discarded plastics are a big cause of pollution, cluttering rivers, seas, and beaches, killing fish, choking birds, and making our environment a much less attractive place.

Public pressure to clean up has produced plastics that seem to be more environmentally friendly. But are they all they’re cracked up to be?
