-Total Plans to Double Recycled PP Capacity for Automotive Industry

Total S.A. has decided to double the production capacity of its affiliate Synova to meet growing market demand for high-performance recycled materials.

By early 2021, Normandy-based Synova, a French leader in its sector, will produce 40,000 ton/yr of recycled polypropylene (PP) that meets the demanding quality standards of automotive OEMs and carmakers. Petrochemical Bioplastics ACN News

-US October propylene contracts settle down 1.5 cents/lb

US October propylene contracts settled lower by 1.5 cents/lb ($33/tonne) for the majority of the market on Thursday, on sluggish demand and rising inventories.

The settlement puts October polymer-grade propylene (PGP) contracts at 37.5 cents/lb DEL (delivered) and chemical-grade propylene (CGP) contracts at 36.0 cents/lb DEL.

Negotiations started earlier in the month at rollovers to slight increases. With derivative demand slow and inventories building, momentum for a decrease gained strength later in the month.Petrochemical Bioplastics ACN

-Zhejiang Petrochemical to launch a new PP plant in China in November

Zhejiang Petrochemical, a private Chinese company, plans to commission a new polypropylene (PP) plant in Zhejiang Province (Zhejiang, China) in November this year, a source close to the company told NCT .

The capacity of the new enterprise will be 900 thousand tons of PP per year.

It was noted earlier that at the end of last year, the company began test production at refineries with a capacity of 400 barrels per day at the new Zhoushan petrochemical complex in eastern China and intends to increase its capacity utilization to 100% in the fourth quarter.

Also on this site will be located a cracking unit with a capacity of 1.4 million tons of ethylene per year.

-Company unveils RPET bottle with recycling-friendly barrier coating

A packaging equipment manufacturer has announced a 100% RPET bottle with an extremely thin layer of silica to serve as a gas barrier.

Called Beyond Juice, the container uses technology from German company KHS Corpoplast. The bottle is made from FreshSafe PET, which uses an ultra-thin layer of silica to provide an oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier, protecting the juice or other sensitive beverage. Petrochemical Bioplastics ACN

The barrier technology has already been used in the marketplace in limited applications. For example, FreshSafe PET has been used for Bronco Wine’s 187-milliliter PET wine bottles.

The Association of Plastic Recyclers confirmed that a crystallizable shrink sleeve label with washable ink meets its criteria for recyclability in the PET bottle stream.

The label and ink comes from Bardstown, Ky.-headquartered American Fuji Seal, a global provider of labels, labeling equipment and pouches.
