-NAPCOR: Updated PET resin life cycle analysis and calculator

The National Association for PET Container Resources (NAPCOR) announced the release of an updated Cradle-To-Resin Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of Polyethylene Terephthalate Resin.

This study, along with the Association of Plastic Recyclers’ 2018 analysis of recycled resins (both conducted by Franklin Associates, a division of ERG) provides the data to compare energy requirements, solid waste generation, and environmental emissions for the processes involved in manufacturing virgin PET material and those required to collect, sort, and reprocess postconsumer PET packaging into clean recycled resin.

Using the comparative findings from these recent LCAs, an infographic and calculator tool were created by NAPCOR to illustrate the comparative impacts of virgin PET (VPET) and RPET. Petrochemical SustainableSources PLA

A reduction of 60% in greenhouse gas emissions may be achieved by replacing a unit of VPET with RPET. When using RPET in place of VPET, a 75% lower total energy demand may be achieved, and 40% less process and transportation energy is expended.

-Orkla and IRPLAST join SABIC TRUCIRCLE initiative for consumer goods packaging using certified renewable plastics

SABIC, a global leader in the chemical industry today announced that Orkla, a diversified Nordic brand owner in business-to-consumer (B2C) commerce with foods, snacks, food care for sport and food ingredients, has launched its first chips packaging using certified renewable polypropylene (PP) polymer from SABIC’s TRUCIRCLE portfolio, as per the company’s press release. Petrochemical SustainableSources PLA

The sustainable material is derived from tall oil, a residual product from the Nordic forestry industry, and is converted into a Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) by IRPLAST, a major Italian vertically integrated manufacturer of specialty S-BOPP films and converter of printed shrinkable BOPP roll-fed labels and PSA tapes. In Orkla’s chips bags, the material solution helps lower the carbon footprint of the three partners’ value chain in half compared to the use of traditional non-renewable plastics.

-Sasol in final stages of new LDPE plant startup, resumes Lake Charles operations

Sasol is continuing in the final stages for the startup of its new 420,000 mt/year low-density polyethylene (LDPE) plant after previously announcing a startup for October, the company’s spokesperson, Kim Cusimano, said in an email to S&P Global Nov. 3.

The company resumed operations for all its Lake Charles, Louisiana, chemical complex units that were operating before Hurricane Laura, Cusimano said.

Sasol is among the Lake Charles chemical producers that shut operations ahead of Hurricane Laura’s Aug. 27 landfall, and again before Hurricane Delta came ashore Oct. 9, which was the same path as Laura. Petrochemical SustainableSources PLA

The LDPE plant was delayed to a startup in November due to Hurricane Delta interrupting its planned October startup date.

-Ribena rolls out major packaging redesign

Ribena is unveiling an eye-catching new design that will make it the largest soft drinks brand with bottles that are made from 100 per cent recycled plastic and are 100 per cent bottle-to-bottle recyclable. Petrochemical SustainableSources PLA

Every Ribena bottle – once recycled – will now have the optimum chance of being recycled into another drinks bottle. Rolling out from November, the new design features a reduction in the plastic sleeve, making the bottles more easily detected as clear plastic. This packaging change has been made possible following a two-year development programme and investment of £1.6m (~€1.8m) in new manufacturing equipment.

Every new Ribena bottle will feature a number of recycling messages embossed on its bottle, as well as featuring on the bottle label, to encourage consumers to recycle.

-SACMI BIB: 100% sustainable Bag-in-Box from production to shelf

Bags and boxes made of recycled material. Flexibility, accuracy and filling hygiene. Versatility with all types of packaging – With the integrated monobloc for the production of Bag-In-Box type packaging, SACMI launches the challenge of 100% sustainability along the entire value chain, from production to shelf. Petrochemical SustainableSources PLA

Compact and integrated, the SACMI solution has long been recognised and rewarded by the market for its versatility and efficiency in the handling of different products, thanks to a high-performance process that makes it possible to switch directly from the materials that make up the packaging to the finished product, filled and packaged, available for distribution in a confined space.

From the pack point of view, SACMI BIB’s latest generation solutions are characterised by the possibility of using bags in 100% recycled polyethylene (PE) or PET and carbon-free caps. Sustainable by definition – the storage of potentially large quantities of product limits the packaging required to the essential – BIB packaging is redesigned by SACMI taking into account the entire shelf-life of the product, from filling to logistics, up to consumption and subsequent disposal of the container.

The Bavarian viscose speciality fibre manufacturer Kelheim Fibres has achieved a leading score in Canopy’s 2020 Hot Button Report. Kelheim Fibres ranks overall among the top 5 producers and was even able to improve their good previous year’s result.
