-New Wolf Gray Cordura TrueLock fibre launched

Invista’s Cordura brand has announced its latest innovation in solution-dyed nylon (SDN) 6,6 fibre technology with mill partner MMI Textiles, a premier supplier and one-stop shop supplying fabric, webbing and elastics. MMI Textiles is the exclusive North American provider of fabrics and webbing made with the new Wolf Gray Cordura TrueLock fibre, now through December 2018.

Cordura TrueLock fibre is created from Invista nylon 6,6 multi-filament fibre that is solution dyed, locking the colour in at the molten polymer extrusion level to create deep, durable colour throughout the entire fibre structure. Colour consistency is crucial when pairing fabric with other materials, such as webbing and elastic to create uniform garments and gear, the company explains.

-$100 Oil Isn’t as Outlandish as You Might Think

If you came here to find out when oil will reach $100 a barrel, I’m sorry to disappoint. The thousands of factors that go into the price of oil at any given time make it hard to put a timestamp on prices. Demand can wax and wane with global economic growth, and supplies can’t always react fast enough to keep prices consistent. Plus, since the word of OPEC carries such gravity with the global market, those without a Being John Malkovich – style door into the minds of OPEC ministers have no chance of knowing what prices will do over the next few weeks or months.

-US September PS prices settle at increase

US September polystyrene (PS) contracts have settled at an average increase of 2 cents/lb ($44/tonne) following higher feedstock prices in August.

The price increase comes amid mixed pressure in the market between the higher August feedstock prices and some falling feedstock prices this month.

ICIS benzene, ethylene and styrene spot prices increased in August, but only ethylene prices have notched further gains in September.

Typically, September is a lower demand month for PS, but it is still better than it will be later in the year.

Lower benzene and styrene spot prices this month are in contrast to higher ethylene spot prices. That scenario will add mixed pricing pressure heading into October.

-Is This New Super Carbon Better Than Graphene?

Scientists have been searching for schwarzites for decades, here’s how their discovery could change our world.  Graphene is heralded as a wonder-material that could completely change our world. Its incredibly flexible, strong and conductive carbon structure promises to revolutionize energy storage, computing, and technology as we know it.

However, graphene isn’t the only nanocarbon out there with promising applications.

There’s one in particular that’s been capturing scientists’ attention for decades, and it has the potential to be even more game-changing than our fan favorite graphene.

-The circular economy opportunity for urban and industrial innovation in China

Applying circular economy principles at scale in China’s cities could make goods and services more affordable for citizens, while at the same time making cities more liveable, reducing emissions of fine particulate matter by 50%, emissions of greenhouse gases by 23%, and traffic congestion by 47%, by 2040.

The analysis, which identifies opportunities across five focus areas, built environment, mobility, nutrition, textiles and electronics, shows that applying circular economy principles at scale could save businesses and households approximately CNY 70 trillion by 2040 (16% of China’s projected GDP).

-OPEC and non-OPEC allies have reportedly agreed to review current oil production as a countermeasure to the lack of Iranian oil caused by the US sanctions.

On Friday, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) reported that in August, the organization’s countries supplied less oil to world markets than they did in July, which eventually led to a rise in the price of oil in September to $80 a barrel, three OPEC and non-OPEC sources told Reuters.

“There are discussions to increase production by another 500,000 barrels per day (bpd). They [OPEC and non-OPEC producers] can increase output when they meet in December,” the sources said, referring to the next scheduled OPEC meeting on December 3. But if the organization wished to address the shortage before then, it would have to convene an “extraordinary meeting.”

-Recycled PET use held back by collection rates

Beverage multinational subsidiary Coca-Cola Bottling South Africa (CCBSA) uses 10% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) and has completed technical and production validation of 25% rPET content, but is constrained by the availability of rPET, Coca-Cola Bottling Gauteng and inland regional supply chain manager Henry Peek said on Friday.

CCBSA energy and sustainability manager JP Blumenthal detailed the company’s engineering work to make their PET beverage bottles lighter, called lightweighting, which has seen the weight decrease from 54 g for a 2 litre bottle about 11 years ago to 45.7 g currently, with a wall thickness of about 0.3 mm. The company has validated further lightweighting and can reduce the weight of a 2 litre bottle to 41.8 g, which it would phase in over the next six months.

-Balaji Multiflex’s greenfield gets India’s first W&H Heliostar

Rajkot-based Balaji Multiflex opened its doors for the industry to come and see its latest W&H and Nordmeccanica equipment. Director Pranav Bhalara ushered 200+ visitors to the demonstration of W&H Heliostar, India’s first and Varex blown film line along with Nordmeccanica laminators.

Director Pranav Balhara ushered the over 200 flexible packaging technocrats to the machine demonstrations across the greenfield factory situated in the outskirts of Rajkot.

The new Heliostar II at Multiflex is a nine-colour gravure press with a width of 1400mm and maximum printing speeds of 500 metres per minute. During the demonstration, the machine printed a seven-colour print job on a 15-micron BOPP film. Running at 82 metres per minute in the beginning, the machine speed was ramped up to 500 metres per minute within a few seconds without losing the registration. Noteworthy is that the machine is extremely quiet even when operating at a high speed.

-Hand sanitizers, antibacterial wipes: Bad for you?

Your friend may be onto something. The so-called “Hygiene Hypothesis”—first put forth by British epidemiologist David Strachan in a 1989 paper in the medical journal Thorax—suggests that a lower incidence of infection during early childhood (thanks to more sterile, less crowded environments as compared to earlier times) could explain the rapid rise in allergic diseases in the late 20th century. As the theory goes, in the modern world our immune systems no longer have to deal with the vast numbers of potential real pathogens we experienced during the previous stages of our evolution. With so much more time on their hands, our antibodies rise up against other perceived dangers—gluten, peanuts, milk—which in fact are not really threatening. Our immune systems’ over-reaction manifests itself in the form of pesky and occasionally life-threatening allergies.

-South Africa’s Ramaphosa unveils stimulus plan

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Friday unveiled his stimulus and recovery plan to boost economic growth after the economy entered a technical recession in the first half of this year.

“Fellow South Africans, it is generally agreed that in order for our economy to grow at a rate that will lead to job creation on a meaningful scale we need to significantly increase the level of investment,” said Ramaphosa in Pretoria.

In recent months, structural weaknesses such as a low skilled workforce, inefficient state-owned enterprises and a lack of trust between government and the private sector due to “state capture” have been compounded by a higher oil price, weaker sentiment towards emerging markets, and global trade tensions.

The plan focuses on youth, women and small businesses, but was short on detail and seemed to lack urgency as the timelines were given in terms of months, not days.

-Vacuums, tires, and computer parts: These are the goods that will be hit the hardest by Trump’s new China tariffs

President Donald Trump announced a new tariff on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods on Monday.

The tariff, which goes into effect September 24, will hit a wide range of goods, from furniture to industrial chemicals.

These are the biggest imports that are going to get hit, ranked by the monetary value of total imports to the US from China in 2017.

President Donald Trump’s latest broadside against China could drive up the cost of some very important imports.

The  latest round of tariffs, which  hit goods ranging from from agricultural products like fruit, to consumer goods like furniture to industrial items like chemicals, are set to go into effect on Monday. Economists expect that the items hit by the 10% tariff will increase in price, making those goods more expensive for US consumers and businesses.
