FixDye To Produce Recycled Dope-Dyed Filament Yarn With rPET Flakes On Systems Of Oerlikon Barmag Huitong Engineering

The recycled polyester yarn manufacturer FixDye has opted for the polycondensation system manufacturer Oerlikon Barmag Huitong Engineering (OBHE) to increase its production capacities.

Oerlikon Barmag Huitong Engineering’s polycondensation systems stand for the best downstream performance and a reduced environmental footprint. rPET Flakes

The company, based in Huai’an, China, is thus expanding its production capacities in melt preparation, the production stage upstream of the spinning mill. This will not only allow FixDye to better influence yarn quality, but also to keep an eye on the supply chain of its products, regardless of external influences. This is an unbeatable advantage when it comes to the ambitious goals of the circular economy.

The plant with a capacity of 3 x 180 tons per day of recycled bottle flakes for textile filament yarn is a clear commitment to the sustainable textile industry.

From mid-2025, it will mainly produce FDY and POY/DTY for the European and US markets. rPET Flakes

The yarns produced are spun-dyed for ecological reasons, zero water dyeing method.

Asahi Kasei to Build Battery Component Plant in Ontario

Canada leads globally in the electric vehicle (EV) market. With increasing EV demand, the aim is to assemble more EVs within the country. Over the past four years, investments exceeding $46 billion have poured into Canada from auto, EV battery, and battery component manufacturers, with more expected. These global companies seek a reliable partner with top-tier talent, which Canada provides. rPET Flakes

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Asahi Kasei Corporation’s $1.6 billion investment to construct an EV battery separator plant in Port Colborne, Ontario. With projected medium-to long-term growth in the North American EV market, Asahi Kasei anticipates additional multi-billion-dollar investments through multiple phases. Details on the direct jobs created by this investment will be disclosed later.

Asahi Kasei’s decision underscores the competitive business environment, skilled workforce, and reliable supply chains in Canada and Ontario. The project will benefit from federal support through the Clean Technology Manufacturing investment tax credit, with Ontario offering both direct and indirect incentives. rPET Flakes

Scientists invent method to transform near-unbreakable plastic into biodegradable polyester

Polyethylene, PE, is a very important and widely used plastic and it is also incredibly difficult to break down in nature. A new project will enable the recycling and upcycling of PE by converting it into biodegradable polyester via a 3-stage process.

Plastic is hard to break down in nature. Polyethylene (PE) is particularly tough because its strong molecular structure is highly resistant to oxygen, sunlight and biodegradation. PE is also the most important and widely used plastic, accounting for approximately 34 per cent of all plastic produced. Today, only 12 per cent of PE is recycled and only one per cent is converted into high-value products.  rPET Flakes

But PE can actually be broken down, transformed and recycled. Though it requires a combination of chemical and biological technologies including highly specific catalysts, recombinant microbial systems and the right enzymes.

An international team of researchers, led by Aarhus University, has now been granted € 4.8 million (DKK 35.5 million) from the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon Europe, to develop an industrially viable method to convert PE into biodegradable polyester and other high-value products. rPET Flakes

Dow and Freepoint Eco-Systems announce supply agreement to transform plastic waste into new circular products

Dow and Freepoint Eco-Systems have announced a supply agreement to recycle 65,000 metric tons of plastic waste into circular feedstock, advancing their shared goal of supporting a circular economy for plastics in North America. Freepoint Eco-Systems will build an ISCC Plus-Certified advanced recycling facility in Arizona to process end-of-life plastic waste into pyrolysis oil, diverting it from landfills or incineration. Dow, as the sole offtaker from the first phase of this facility, will convert the pyrolysis oil into virgin-grade equivalent plastics, meeting customer demand for recycled content. PET Chips market

This agreement aligns with Dow’s “Transform the Waste” initiative and its efforts to accelerate the circular ecosystem. The Arizona facility, owned by Freepoint Eco-Systems Eloy Recycling LLC, will process approximately 70% of plastic waste into pyrolysis oil, exclusively sold to Dow starting in 2026. Dow will use this circular supply to produce new products suitable for food-grade and medical packaging, reducing reliance on fossil feedstocks. PET Chips market

Jeff McMahon, managing director at Freepoint Eco-Systems, highlighted the agreement’s role in advancing the circular economy and expanding global capabilities for recycling plastic waste. Victor Zapata, Dow’s North America commercial vice president, emphasized the partnership’s importance in sourcing circular supply and transforming plastic waste into recycled products. PET Chips market

Issam Lazraq, Dow’s global sustainable feedstocks director, noted the collaboration’s impact on sourcing raw materials sustainably and tackling plastic pollution. The new facility in Eloy, Arizona, will eventually recycle 180,000 tons of plastic waste annually, with phase one processing 90,000 tons and producing 65,000 metric tons of pyrolysis oil. Eloy Mayor Micah Powell praised the project for its sustainable economic growth and job creation.

Unifi announces Repreve Champions of Sustainability Award winners

Now in their seventh year, the annual awards are meant to celebrate global brand, textile and retail partners for their sustainability efforts.

Unifi Inc., Greensboro, North Carolina, has announced its seventh annual Repreve Champions of Sustainability Award recipients. The annual awards are meant to celebrate the company’s global brand, textile and retail partners who have recycled over 40 billion plastic bottles into new products through its Repreve brand of recycled performance fiber.

Since 1971, Unifi says it has spearheaded textile industry innovation, and since launching Repreve in 2007 has recycled over 40 billion plastic bottles into recycled fiber for new apparel, footwear, home goods and other consumer products. PET Chips market

The company says by giving discarded resources fresh purpose as recycled high-performance materials, it empowers brands to be better and encourages people to want better.

This year’s Champions of Sustainability awards will be presented to 37 brand and retail partners that have transformed 10 million or more recycled plastic bottles and 64 textile partners that have transformed 50 million or more recycled plastic bottles through the use of Repreve.

Unifi CEO Eddie Ingle tells Recycling Today the awards prove that when brands make a sustainability commitment, they are translating it into action. And when brand partners are making their supply chain more sustainable by using Repreve, Unifi wants to celebrate that. PET Chips market

“Everybody loves an award,” Ingle says. “But everybody, when they accept an award, what we find is they’re accepting it on behalf of their company because they know, like we know, that it’s not easy to [move from a virgin product and supply chain to a recycled one]. I think it’s a feel-good thing for us because it gets us closer to our brands but, more importantly, it’s saying thank you to somebody and giving gratitude for somebody’s efforts.”
